Kroger, Macy's respond to Texas boycott

CINCINNATI -- The Kroger Co. said Thursday it has yet to see a sales impact from a Texas advocacy group?s call for a boycott against Cincinnati-based retailers, Kroger and Macy?s Inc.

Progress Texas called for the boycott this week after a Houston newspaper reported they were among several retailers who asked Texas Gov. Rick Perry to veto the Texas Equal Pay Law. Perry vetoed the legislation in June.

The bill would have made it easier for Texas women to file discrimination claims in the state court system. Backers of the legislation say the law was necessary because the Texas Supreme Court ruled that federal equal-pay laws do not apply to state-based cases.

Both Kroger and Macy?s issued statements today saying they support equal pay for equal work but they believe existing Texas and federal laws already allow for discrimination claims to be addressed.

?Your opposition is infuriating,? said the online petition from Progress Texas. ?It is shameful that while you are busy convincing Moms and Millennials to spend money on clothes and lunch boxes at back-to-school sales, you are advocating behind their backs to deny women equal pay for equal work.?

Macy?s declined to say whether the boycott call had a revenue impact.

Here are the companies? statements on the matter:

?Kroger strongly supports equal pay for women. We are proud of the thousands of women who are Kroger managers and employees and who are leaders in their industry and in their communities. We believe that existing Texas laws and federal laws protect equal pay rights and provide ample ways for discrimination claims to be resolved. We have heard from some customers who are concerned about this issue and we thank them for letting us know. We want to assure them that Kroger believes in equal pay for equal work.?=

"Macy's absolutely supports equal pay for equal work among men and women. This has been a fundamental principle in our company for many years. Keep in mind that 73% of management-level executives at Macy's, Inc. are women, and we have been widely recognized for our support of women at all levels of the organization and in the communities where we operate. We believe that existing federal and Texas state laws provide strong remedies for the resolution of any claims of discrimination."
