NOVI ? The terrain is suddenly bursting at the seams with playmakers on the high school football field in Walled Lake. And they don?t just hail from one program or even two.
Walled Lake is suddenly a three-team town.
We already knew about Walled Lake Western and Walled Lake Central ? they?ve both made final-four appearances in the past three years.
But with the emergence of Walled Lake Northern last fall as a genuine contender, the city is wide-open for bragging rights.
Representatives from all three teams were on hand for the inaugural Kensington Lakes Activities Association media day at Novi High School on Thursday afternoon.
The upcoming 2013 campaign should be a slugfest between the trio.
Northern head coach Brett Moore, responsible for the Knights turnaround, knows how intense the intra-city competition will be in 2013.
?The whole town?s a grind now and that makes for multiple intense rivalries and good, exciting football games,? he said.
Moore led Northern to the program?s first-ever winning-season, playoff-berth, playoff-win and city and league titles to boot in 2012.
?People really took notice about Northern football last year,? Knights senior all-league middle linebacker Aaron Chretien said. ?That season put us on the map. Now, it?s up for us to continue that success and keep building on it this season. I'm proud to be part of the effort.?
Sporting the top offense in the area last year, Northern will be changing quarterbacks this fall, with senior Chase Burton assuming the reins of the Knights? offense from departing all-league field general Collin O?Donnell.
Unlike Northern, Central and Western return their standouts under center. Central?s Nick Krumm and Western?s Kyle Bambard are both versatile weapons calling signals, able to hurt opposing defenses in the pocket with their arms or on the ground with their fleet-footed elusiveness.
Krumm (son of West Bloomfield alum and former Michigan State All-Big 10 safety Todd Krumm) heads a very strong junior class at Central, hoping for a big bounce-back from an under-500 campaign last year.
?We took our lumps last season and now we?re ready to return the program where it rightly needs to be,? Central head coach Bob Meyer said.
Two-time defending district-champs, Western has only finished below .500 and missed the playoffs once in the last dozen years and the Warriors are primed for another banner season on the gridiron. Western features a battle-tested line-up that returns 17 starters.
Longtime Western head coach Mike Zdebski praised his club during Thursday's media day.
?This team has put in a lot of time, a lot of blood, sweat and tears in the weight room and on the field and I think we?re as good as any team in the state.?
Bambard, being recruited in college as a placekicker, quarterbacked the Warriors into the Division 2 state semifinals as a sophomore in 2011 and then to a 9-3 record and a repeat district crown in 2012 as a junior.
