(AP) ? The Afghan government says 10 Afghan soldiers have been killed in an attack on a checkpoint in the south and five have either been kidnapped or joined their assailants.

Helmand provincial government spokesman Daoud Ahmadi says insurgents attacked the checkpoint in Washir district Sunday evening. He says another four soldiers were wounded.

Ahmadi did not provide details of the attack. He said Monday that the five missing soldiers left with their assailants but it was unclear if they were kidnapped or went voluntarily.

New ultralight material good for space - and Earth

1 hr.

A ?new version of aerogel ? a strange smoky-looking material that's among the world's lightest solids ? is 500 times stronger than previous versions. A thick piece could support the weight of a car, yet a thin piece easily bends. The material could be used in everything from Mars landers to refrigerators, scientists say.

Researchers at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland are developing the new?aerogel?for space missions first, but it may find a place on Earth, too. "Primarily we've been developing these materials for NASA mission applications, such as spacesuits," lead scientist Mary Ann Meador said during a news conference Aug. 19. "These would be able to land larger payloads or manned missions on Mars."

In the future, the material could go into thinner housing insulation, roomier refrigerators and TV antennas that capture broader frequency ranges, she added. Like other aerogels, it is an excellent insulator and has unique electrical properties. "This type of insulation could also be translated into use on Earth for a variety of applications," she said. [How Cellulose Could Make Fibers As Strong As Steel]

Before Meador's latest version, aerogels were made with silica, the same mineral that makes up sand and glass. Silica aerogels are strong but brittle. During the conference, which was held in Philadelphia, and which InnovationNewsDaily watched as a live video feed, Meador held up a small glass jar with broken silica aerogel in it. She had put in a whole piece of the material, but, she said, "It's such fragile material that it's broken apart."?

When used in spacecraft, silica aerogels tend to create dust that blows away, reducing its insulating ability, she said.?

The new aerogel is made from a plastic-based gel that's dried in a supercritical dryer to remove all the liquid. The manufacturing process is similar to silica-based aerogels and creates a material of similarly low density that's 85 to 95 percent air.?

The plastic-like material doesn't create dust, however, and can be made into thin, flexible sheets. Meador demonstrated a sheet during the conference, bending it nearly in half and saying, "This is a form of aerogel insulation that has never been seen before." ?

The new aerogel's thin, flexible qualities mean it can go into fabric decelerators for larger spacecraft. NASA is working on inflatable parachutes that slow spacecraft down as they land and protect the craft from the high temperatures created when plowing through an atmosphere. The new material could go into a decelerator such as the?IRVE-3?NASA tested in July, Meador said.

The new aerogel won't entirely replace silica aerogels because it isn't translucent, like the silica kind are, so it can't go into windows, Meador later wrote to InnovationNewsDaily in an email. It may also be less insulating than silica aerogels.?

As for when people may see the plastic-based aerogel in their TVs and fridges, Meador said NASA is working with the University of Akron in Ohio and a company in the Cleveland area to manufacture the aerogel in long rolls. "It's something you can visualize in the next couple to five years," she said.

After the news conference, Meador described her research to other scientists at the American Chemical Society's national meeting in Philadelphia.

squidoo - Tips for Charcoal Grill Cooking

If you settled on a charcoal grill in the detriment of a gas one, you are most probably a traditional person. In the past, when there were no gas grills as today, everyone used charcoal to get that special smoky flavor once the outdoor grill season has started.

Today, gas products have become extremely popular as it delivers an extremely convenient cooking experience. Still, people who are looking for some genuine barbeque cooking will go with charcoal, while for other people there is no other way. For a superior barbeque cooking experience, just follow the following charcoal grill cooking tips.

First, you need to purchase a sufficiently large charcoal grill which is adequate to your cooking needs. As conventional grills are cheaper as gas grills, you should easily find a quality charcoal grill for less money. Some Weber grills have been in use almost a decade, with no need whatsoever to replace it for a new one. Your barbeque will also last for long if you properly maintain and store it all year long.

In terms of charcoal grilling, one of the most important things related to it is patience. It is all about waiting for the right time to get started with the cooking. It is not a good idea to place the food on the grill right after lighting the coals, as you will face flames out of your control. It is important to wait till the coal is properly died down and a grey color appears on the coals. That is the right temperature for you to start the grill cooking, as there are not going to be any flames ruining your cooking and food.

As soon as the grill is sufficiently hot, you can place the food on it. Make sure the food stays there until a crispy seal forms. In fact, this is an essential part of the entire cooking and you definitely don't want to interfere with it. Once you can sear its surface, a natural barrier is created that maintains all the juices inside the food. Don't cut the meat to verify if it is properly cooked, as that is a major mistake. Do not disturb the meat; use instead a timer to calculate the timer when the meat is done. Additionally, when the food is picked off from the grill, you should let it rest for a while for the juice to be evenly distributed. If flavor has been added to the food in advance, you should now have quite a delicious grilled food on your plates.

As we ate our frozen peanut butter pie tonight after a blazing day of 104 degrees, we started thinking about other kinds of frozen pies we could make. I do have a recipe for a Grasshopper a frozen pie I'll try, but after searching many files, could not find a frozen lemonade pie recipe that I once had. I just remember it took a can of frozen lemonade concentrate. Would loved to have some tried and true recipes for one.

While I'm at it, I once had a piece of heavenly Key Lime pie at a restaurant in Pittsfield MA (I think, at least it was near Lenox) that was heavenly. It arrived at the table in nearly a frozen state. I have tried various Key Lime pie recipes but most call for sweetened condensed milk, and I don't like the taste of them. So I'd take any Key Lime pie recipes too--especially if they are intended to be served frozen! Thanks,

Leann

Kaylin,

I love your e-mail newsletter!!! I just subscribed to you again under my new e-mail address. I don't want to miss any of them!!! One of your readers was looking for easy casseroles recipes. This one is easy, cheap, can be frozen and is really good! hope this helps.

I am also looking for a recipe for a Honey Dijon Vinaigrette Salad Dressing. Wishbone used to make one that I liked but I can't find it in stores anymore. any help would be most appreciated! Thank you,

Sausage and Cheese Casserole

1lb. breakfast sausage, cooked and crumbled (any flavor of sausage you like)
10-12 ounces of noodles, cooked (i usually use shells or bowties but you use what you wish or have on hand)
1 can cheddar cheese soup
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped bell pepper (any color, i like the red)
1/8 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp. dry mustard
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, but my family likes it with more cheese)

Mix all ingredients together and put in casserole dish. Cook uncovered in 350 degree F oven for 30-40 minutes or until it is browned the way you like it. You can also sprinkle extra cheese on top before baking if desired. This can go from freezer to oven to table. If frozen, cover the casserole with foil while baking until the last few minutes to brown it. Also will take a little longer to bake. I usually put it in the fridge to defrost in the morning and then bake it later. I like the taste better plus it takes less time to bake it. ?

Here's a quick and easy one (serves two)

Drovers Delight

1 large slice of rump or blade cut into 2 pieces
1 packet powdered Soup mix (eg. French Onion or Spring Vegetable)
2 carrots (chopped)
1 can diced tomatoes

Place steak into a greased casserole dish, add carrots. Sprinkle with soup powder ? pour over tomatoes and liquid from can, cook in casserole dish in moderate oven covered 1 ? hours or until meat is tender. Can also be cooked in slow cooker.

This isn't outside the norm, but when it's hot the best way to cook is to drag out the old crock pot. My favorite recipe is:

Chicken Dinner

2 cans cream of chicken soup, undiluted
1 can cheddar cheese soup, undiluted
6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (or your favorite pieces of chicken)

Place chicken in crock pot, cover with soups and cook on low all day. Serve over rice. Makes a delicious gravy.

I got this yummy recipe from my friend Janelle Butler, along with an explanation of the recipe name.

Caramel Brownie Recipe (aka Dead Man Brownies)

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F

6 oz pkg Semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 German Chocolate Cake Mix
? cup Margarine or Butter Melted (I use butter)
1 pkg of Kraft Caramels (I find the Kraft brand isn't gritty when melted)
1 small can of Evaporated Milk (I use sweetened condensed milk for more
sweetness)

In large bowl mix melted butter with cake mix and 1/3 cup of evaporated or sweetened milk, mix well (if using sweetened condensed milk add a couple tablespoons of water to the mix.) Pour ? of the batter in a 13 x 9 inch cake pan. (I put my hand in a plastic sandwich bag to evenly spread the batter.) Bake for 10 minutes. Melt caramels and 1/3 cup milk; pour on top of baked cake mix. (the caramel will not spread so drizzle) Top the caramel with chocolate chips. Put the remainder of the batter on the top. (I find it easier to drop spoonfuls of the stiff
batter and carefully spread with spatula). Bake for 15 minutes. Cool and cut.

Now I must explain how these wonderful treats got the name "Dead Man Brownies".

Before my mom lost her battle with cancer she was the secretary for our church. She would organize everything, even the dreaded wakes. When my son was 5 years old we went to visit "Granny" and she was preparing these wonderful brownies. Beau got to taste them and loved them!! (I wonder why? All that sugar and chocolate.) The next time we visited and she was making them for a wake. Of course Beau wanted not just one but the whole pan, she had to tell him that they were for someone's family who's Grandpa had died. She made more soon after that and when Beau saw the pan he blurted out, Hey!! Are those the Dead Man Brownies?? That's what they've been called in our house since. Enjoy!!

Are You Trying To Get Him Back ? The Best Break Up Advice

Are You Trying to Get Him Back ? the Best Break Up Advice

Getting back together with your ex-boyfriend can be easier than you are thinking, but whether he will be interested may depend on how you go about getting him back. Whether you chose to end the relationship or he did, you can still get him back.

However, if you are serious about getting back together, you will avoid contacting him for several weeks after the break up. This may not sound like the right thing to do, but you must allow him time to start missing you, and he will not do this if you are phoning him regularly.

If several weeks have gone by and he hasn't yet got in touch with you, then you may want to think about arranging an "accidental" meeting. You will know some of the places he likes to visit, so perhaps you and a friend could go to one of these venues. Make sure that you look good, so you can show him exactly what he is missing. Don't worry about starting up a conversation at this stage, just make sure he notices you.

Don't stay at home all of the time. Make sure you go out, and let him now that you are getting on with your life. If he thinks you are moving on, then he is more likely to decide he wants you back in his life, and you may find that he contacts you to see what you think of the possibility. If he sees that you are attracting attention from other men, even if you are not remotely interested in anybody else, then this is likely to make him feel jealous, and want to try again at making a relationship with you work.

Make sure you spend time looking after yourself as well. Treat yourself to a new haircut, some new clothes, or do whatever else you want to make you look and feel great. If you really want to get him back, then you will need to show him what he is missing, and looking fantastic is an important part of this, despite it sounding extremely shallow.

Most importantly of all, if he is really the man for you, don't give up. You can get him back if you work at it and you really want it to happen, so keep trying. A break up does not have to mean that you will not be able to make it work in the future, so if you want this, go for it.

LexisNexis News - Latest News from over 4000 sources, including ...

For Immediate ReleaseKYL COLUMN: Lasting SolutionsAugust 6 2012The issue of illegal immigration is wrought with strong emotions and political divisiveness - no one understands this more than the citizens of Arizona. Yet, legal immigration has also played an undeniably important role in the shaping of our nation`s history and culture; many of us owe our present American identity to immigrants from a not-so-distant ancestry. I see no reason for tension between our heritage of welcoming immigrants and our bedrock commitment to upholding the rule of law.How can we begin to prioritize lasting solutions? It is trite to say (because there is such general agreement) that we must first gain control of our borders. Although progress has been made in recent years (due largely to congressionally mandated increases in border security personnel and infrastructure), there continue to be hundreds of thousands of individuals who illegally cross our borders or overstay their visas every year. Arizona has long borne the brunt of this problem, with widespread consequences felt by our state.Unfortunately, there has been a lack of presidential leadership dedicated to improving the enforcement of existing immigration laws. The Obama Administration has repeatedly declined to effectively deploy the tactical resources and enforcement programs necessary to get our borders under control. At the same time, it argues that insufficient funding forces it to prioritize immigration enforcement efforts toward only the most serious criminals, thus ignoring the vast majority of the illegal immigrant population. The most glaring example of the administration`s disregard for the law occurred when President Obama issued a unilateral decision to halt to the deportation of a large class of individuals - in this case, young illegal immigrants. Simply because the president disagrees with existing law does not mean he can write his own law.Indeed, the president`s election-year gimmick has actually undermined thoughtful legislative efforts to resolve the status of many young people who, through no fault of their own, were brought to this country illegally by their parents. But the administration has gone far beyond just ignoring the law; it is now actively preventing states like Arizona from helping to enforce immigration laws designed to fill gaps in federal enforcement. Despite the Supreme Court`s ruling in June that states may assist with certain areas of immigration enforcement, the administration immediately moved to cease cooperative efforts with Arizona`s state and local law authorities to apprehend illegal immigrants - a brazen political ``penalty`` for daring to disagree with the Obama Administration.Throughout my career, I have worked to develop effective federal immigration policies. For example, last year Senator McCain and I introduced the Border Security Enforcement Act (S. 803), a 10- point plan to combat illegal immigration, drug and alien smuggling, and violent activity along the border. Another important tool I have supported is E-Verify, a computer-based program that allows businesses to verify whether someone is eligible to work in the U.S.Both of these measures, of course, require political consensus to implement - and the president`s actions have made that difficult to achieve. That`s unfortunate, because we cannot turn our attention toward addressing more comprehensive immigration challenges until we finish the first job of securing the border and enforcing immigration law. Unless the administration is willing to uphold the rule of law, any additional reforms to our nation`s immigration laws cannot be taken seriously - they may simply be ignored, or not enforced at all.Sen. Gaming Angels: Darksiders II Hands-on Preview | N4G

Gaming Angels: THQ held a community event last week for their upcoming, much anticipated title, Darksiders II, during which they let us play the first 8 hours of the game. Coming into the event, I was very nervous about playing Darksiders II for so long, as I didn?t finish the first Darksiders game. The platforming puzzles and over-the-top Zelda cloning proved to be too much for my lack of patience, and I nearly flipped over a coffee table in rage. It really made me sad that I didn?t finish the game, as the story was so great and I really wanted to know how War?s story finished outside of reading a summary on Wikipedia. So having to play a game that could potentially make me flip something that?s not mine in rage really made me anxious. I am so pleased to say that I loved every second I had with Darksiders II.
