Wade's winning shot lifts Heat over Bobcats 96-95 (AP)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? Dwyane Wade hit a bank shot over Gerald Henderson with 2.9 seconds left to lift the Miami Heat to a 96-95 victory over the pesky Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday and remain unbeaten.

After Henderson hit a 3-pointer from the right wing to put the Bobcats up by one with 12 seconds left, the Heat called time and had Wade bring the ball up. He drove to the left side and banked the shot over Henderson, then turned to Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton seated courtside and imitated Newton's Superman touchdown celebration by pretending to rip open his shirt.

D.J. Augustin's 3-point attempt off a side inbounds play didn't fall and D.J. White's putback at the buzzer rolled off the rim as time expired.

LeBron James scored 35 points and Chris Bosh chipped in with 25 as the Heat overcame a sluggish first half in front of 19,614, the largest crowd ever to see a Bobcats game at Time Warner Cable Arena.

James and Bosh combined to score 35 points in the second half. They had plenty of help from the Bobcats, who turned the ball over 12 times on 25 third-quarter possessions.

Henderson led the Bobcats with 21 points, while Augustin had 20. Boris Diaw had a terrific game as well with 16 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists.

The young Bobcats seemed to feed off the crowd early on and certainly weren't intimidated by the Eastern Conference champions.

The Bobcats jumped out to an 11-0 lead and led by as many as 16 points in the first half against a Heat team that hadn't trailed for more than 14 seconds in their first two games.

They got plenty of open looks, using a pick-and-pop to free up center Diaw for 3-pointers from the top of the key. Augustin was fearless in the first half, showing no signs of a sprained ankle from Monday night by hitting on 3 of 4 3-pointers in the first half for 16 points as the Bobcats took a 60-45 lead into the locker room.

And even without an established big man, the Bobcats outrebounded the Heat 25-14 in the first half.

The Heat looked out of sync and frustrated early on.

James got pickpocketed by Derrick Brown in the halfcourt set and later threw up an air ball on a turnaround jumper after posting up low against Corey Maggette. The other two-thirds of Miami's Big Three also struggled, with Bosh getting rejected in the paint by rookie Bismack Biyombo and Wade hitting just 2 of 8 from the field.

CUPERTINO, Calif., Dec. 30 (UPI) -- While Apple is still selling millions of the iPad 2 tablet, speculation is already swirling about an iPad 3, tech industry observers say.

With the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show and MacWorld/iWorld -- billed as "the world's ultimate fan event" for Apple lovers -- both scheduled for January, observers are debating whether Apple could soon roll out the third generation of the device, CNN reported.

Apple debuted the iPad, introducing the world to the concept of a tablet computer, in January 2010.

"We've entered a post-iPhone news cycle, when iPad rumors are surfacing with full force," Leslie Horn at PC Magazine wrote. "Of course the launch date has been discussed quite a bit, as it goes with any anticipated Apple device. ... But the reality with an Apple gadget is that we'll have to wait and see."

Some tech watchers said a January release date might be wishful thinking.

January is "a little suspect," Richard Shim, an analyst at research firm DisplaySearch, said.

"When they make them available they want to have as many as possible," Shim said. "And my sense is that they will wait rather than make them immediately available."

Rumors on hardware upgrades center on a faster processor, a sharper screen, and perhaps even voice control similar to the Siri "virtual assistant" on the iPhone 4S.

New Year???s Resolutions for Republican Candidates Going into Iowa (ContributorNetwork)

The Iowa caucuses are looming large for Newt Gingrich, Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry and Mitt Romney. Shoring up support with a bit of truth-stretching, the Republican candidates should consider some New Year's resolutions for the rest of election season.

Newt Gingrich: Watch "A Few Good Men" every morning while on the campaign trail

The most memorable exchange of the movie involves Tom Cruise's character demanding the truth. Jack Nicholson's character launches into the inimitable tirade that asserts "You can't handle the truth! ? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom? my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives." Considering that out of 39 PolitiFact ratings, Gingrich only scores three that register as "true," it is clear that subterfuge, deception, trickery and outright dishonesty are part and parcel of this politician's makeup. Watching "A Few Good Men" every morning may serve to quiet the nagging teachings of Roman Catholicism, particularly the catechetic exhortation against spreading falsehoods.

Michele Bachmann: Watch "Thelma & Louise" whenever thinking of becoming a second Sarah Palin

An Aug. 5 Washington Post editorial asserted that candidate Bachmann learned the lessons of a failed Sarah Palin. I am not so sure that I agree. Bachmann's courting of the Tea Party and her well known historical blunders -- John Quincy Adams' elevation to founding father comes to mind -- squarely put her into Palin territory. Watching "Thelma & Louise," particularly the final scene that has the heroines going over the cliff, may have her think twice of playing Geena Davis to Palin's Susan Sarandon.

Rick Perry and Mitt Romney: Read "The Politics of Jesus" before making another campaign ad or stop

Granted, the persona of John Yoder fell into disrepute, but his tome concerning the Christ's politics might come in handy the next time Perry films a campaign ad in the same vein as "Strong." It would also help Romney reconcile his first forays -- as recorded by the Washington Post -- into the deep waters of "religious ornamentation" and related issues. Neither a conservative Pharisee nor a liberal Sadducee -- or a revolutionary zealot for that matter -- the Messiah chose to be a radical non-conformist with a strong pacifist bend and unapologetic intent of breaking down cultural barriers of inequality. Recognizing that Christ would not make a suitable running mate for Perry or Romney can help the latter two to get taken seriously by religious voters.

Adele sells most albums in a year since 2004 (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? That Adele's "21" will rank as the year's top-selling album is no surprise - the English singer-songwriter's hits "Rolling in the Deep" and "Someone Like You" dominated playlists in 2011. What is surprising is that "21," released by independent British label XL Recordings, sold more than 5 million copies.

The last time an album topped the year-end chart with more than 5 million copies sold was in 2004, when Usher's "Confessions" moved 7.9 million, according to Nielsen Soundscan, which supplied all sales data for this story.

Indeed, music sales overall are expected to end 2011 up more than 3 percent from last year. Not coincidentally, the last time overall music sales rose by so much was in 2004 as well.

The resurgence in sales is welcome news for the music industry. A meager 1 percent increase in digital sales last year created widespread panic that the format had already plateaued.

Nielsen analyst David Bakula attributed the rebound to a strong release slate, plus retailers getting more aggressive with pricing and promotions.

For instance, Lady Gaga's album "Born This Way" was priced at 99 cents - less than one-tenth the price of most albums - in a special deal, helping drive sales beyond her core fans, he said. The promotion on Amazon.com angered other retailers who were selling the album at full price, however.

"In 2004, you had one massive album driving sales," said Bakula, senior vice president of entertainment analytics for Nielsen. "This year is similar in that you have one really great story that everyone is talking about."

Digital sales are expected to end 2011 close to 10 percent higher, prompting Bakula to proclaim the sales performance "a great resurgence."

Physical albums still outsell digital albums by a 2:1 margin. But total music sales, which would include digital singles, are now split 50-50 between physical and digital.

TOPPING 5 MILLION

To put Adele's sales figures in context, the more than 3.5 million physical albums she sold this year would have been good enough to take the top spot in each of the last three years without even adding in digital sales. Album sales include LPs, compact discs and digital albums.

Figures for the year's best-selling album declined every year from 2004 to 2008. They hit an all-time low in 2008 when Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" took the top spot with sales of just 2.9 million, the first time an album claimed the best-seller title with sales of less than 3 million.

Since 2008, however, sales of the top-selling album of the year have increased, though not by much. Taylor Swift took the top spot in 2009, selling 3.2 million copies of "Fearless." Eminem's "Recovery" finished 2010 as the year's best-seller with 3.4 million copies.

"Adele's performance this year shows the demand for great original music," Bakula said. "Here's an artist that had moderate success before, but nothing of this magnitude, and she's doing it all on two singles."

Amy Winehouse's death from alcohol poisoning in July also factored into Adele's sales performance. Bakula said the attention Winehouse's death received stoked interest among fans to sample other soulful, jazz-infused female British singer-songwriters, like Adele and Duffy. As a result, in addition to buying "21," consumers dipped into Adele's back catalog, making her prior release, "19," one of the year's top 25 best-sellers.

Still, Adele's sales total is less than half of the more than 11 million copies that "No Strings Attached" from N'Sync sold in 2000. That year marked the last time the top spot featured an album that sold in excess of 10 million, underscoring the dramatic impact that legitimate digital distribution channels like Apple's iTunes and illegal file-sharing sites such as Limewire have had on the music industry.

Kucinich opposing veteran Democrat in Ohio primary (AP)

TOLEDO, Ohio ? Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich (koo-SIH'-nich) says he's sticking with his plan to run against fellow Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur in a U.S. House primary contest that will pit two veteran lawmakers against each other.

Kucinich had spent the last few weeks mulling whether to run against Kaptur or seek another seat in Cleveland after the Ohio Legislature approved a new congressional district map.

The new map gave Kaptur a bigger chunk of her current district in the Toledo area, leading to speculation that Kucinich might run against Rep. Marcia Fudge instead.

Kucinich said Wednesday that he will he file to run against Kaptur in a district that hugs the Lake Erie shoreline from Cleveland to Toledo.

The winner of the March primary will be heavily favored to win the seat.

Android Game Review: Dead Space

YouTube link for mobile viewing

Ed. note: The game was sideloaded on a Toshiba Thrive, as it doesn't natively install from the Android Market.

Oh, boy, here we go again. One man stranded on a spaceship? Been there. Hordes of Necromorphs? Done that. On Android? Well now, slow down there, Ace. Now we're talking.

Yes, it's finally happened. Electronics Arts has brought its shock-filled, gore-laden, space epic to Android, and man oh man, was it worth the wait. Dead Space has all the markings of a AAA title, and if it weren't for the slightly dumbed down graphics, you wouldn't know you were playing on a mobile device.

For fans of the Dead Space story, you'll be pleased to know that Dead Space (for Android) is part of the canon and takes place three years after the first official game but before the events of the second.

You play the aptly-named Vandal, a voice-distorted, identity-protected agent of the Church, who is "perfect" for sabotaging power supplies and causing havoc on his ship. Well, until all Hell breaks loose. Necromorphs start pouring out from every hole and crevice, gallivanting about all nimbly bimbly, all with the intent to gobble you up.

But this is Dead Space. You expected that.

For a mobile game, Dead Space plays well. Incredibly well, actually. EA has finally come up with a control scheme that doesn't use a restricting virtual joystick but still is as tight and (fairly) precise as a physical one. Instead of limiting your movement within an imaginary circle, EA simply says, "Move your fingers on top of Vandal as though you were using a virtual joystick and he'll respond appropriately."

It's effective, it feels good, and you never run the risk of stretching your hands too far out and running into the bezel, thereby stopping your movement completely. It works, and I hope to see other enterprising game developers shamelessly copy this control method for their own games. It'll make everyone's experience better.

Shooting is equally intuitive, with a simple tap bringing up your targeting reticule, and another tap popping off a shot. For those mining weapons that can shoot either horizontally or vertically, EA employed a quick screen tilt to change firing modes. No buttons to push, no combos to remember, just a quick tilt and the accelerometer will handle the rest. Just like with the non-existant joystick, it just works.

Graphically, the game looks great. Yeah, they're not quite PC or console graphics (that's especially evident on the Necromorphs close up), but by and large, everything looks amazing. Vandal looks like an absolute boss, and the glowing column along his spine (along with the rest of his getup) is incredibly detailed.

The opening sequence of the game also realy shows off the masterpiece EA has put together for us. Ship environments look realistic. Planets look impressive and rocky. With six different environments to fight (and survive) through, you'll constantly be finding something new to look at (and admire). Weapons look not only futurisitc and worthy of your nerd love, but functional, too. And did I mention the whole thing is voice acted?

There's also the requisite amounts of over-the-top gore, seen as you dismember Necromorphs, find brutalized corpses, and discover messages written in the final moments of someone's life. It all adds up to the heart-pounding experience EA is trying to pull you into. (I mean, they do recommend playing the game with headphones on.)

Overall, Dead Space is one of the strongest entries we've had into serious Android gaming yet, and it has earned a special spot in the upper echelons of the Market, reserved only for those games that truly push the boundry of what we're seeing. Other notables that come to mind are Shadowgun and Emissary of War, so Dead Space finds itself in elite company, and rightfully so.

If you can handle the gore, the thrills, and the heart-pounding "gotcha" moments, Dead Space is most definitely for you. Dead Space is $7.43 in the Android Market.

We've got download links after the break.

Islamists kill dozens in Nigeria Christmas bombs (Reuters)

ABUJA (Reuters) ? Islamist militants set off bombs across Nigeria on Christmas Day - three targeting churches including one that killed at least 27 people - raising fears that they are trying to ignite sectarian civil war.

The Boko Haram Islamist sect, which aims to impose sharia law across the country, claimed responsibility for the three church bombs, the second Christmas in a row the group has caused mass carnage with deadly bombings of churches. Security forces also blamed the sect for two other blasts in the north.

St Theresa's Catholic Church in Madala, a satellite town about 40 km (25 miles) from the centre of the capital Abuja, was packed when the bomb exploded just outside.

"We were in the church with my family when we heard the explosion. I just ran out," Timothy Onyekwere told Reuters. "Now I don't even know where my children or my wife are. I don't know how many were killed but there were many dead."

Hours after the first bomb, blasts were reported at the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church in the central, ethnically and religiously mixed town of Jos, and at a church in northern Yobe state at the town of Gadaka. Residents said many were wounded in Gadaka, but there were no immediate further details.

A suicide bomber killed four security officials at the State Security Service in one of the other bombs, which struck the northeastern town of Damaturu, police said. Residents heard two loud explosions and gunfire in the town.

A Reuters reporter at the church near Abuja saw the front roof had been destroyed, as had several houses nearby. Five burnt out cars were still smouldering. There were scenes of chaos, as shocked residents stared at the wreckage in disbelief.

"Mass just ended and people were rushing out of the church and suddenly I heard a loud sound: 'Gbam!' Cars were in flames and bodies littered everywhere," Nnana Nwachukwu told Reuters.

Father Christopher Barde, Assistant priest of the church, said: "The officials who counted told me they have picked up 27 bodies so far."

Police cordoned off the area around the church. Thousands of furious youths set up burning road blocks on the highway from Abuja leading to Nigeria's largely Muslim north.

Police and the military tried to disperse them by firing live rounds into the air with tear gas.

"We are so angry," shouted Kingsley Ukpabi, as a queue of hooting vehicles lined up behind his flaming barrage.

ATTACKS INCREASE

Boko Haram - which in the Hausa language spoken in northern Nigeria means "Western education is sinful" - is loosely modelled on the Taliban movement in Afghanistan.

It has emerged as the biggest security threat in Nigeria, a country of 160 million split evenly between Christians and Muslims, who for the most part live side by side in peace.

Its low level insurgency used to be largely confined to northeastern Nigeria, but it has struck several parts of the north, centre and the capital Abuja this year.

Last Christmas Eve, a series of bomb blasts around Jos killed 32 people, and other people died in attacks on two churches in the northeast.

At the church near Abuja, a wounded man whose legs were almost shattered to pieces by the blast was loaded onto a stretcher near an ambulance by security services.

"I'll survive," he said in a hushed voice.

The blast in Jos, a tinderbox of ethnic and sectarian tensions that sometimes sees deadly clashes between Muslims and Christians, was accompanied by a shooting spree by militants, who exchanged fire with local police, said Charles Ezeocha, special taskforce spokesman for Jos.

"We lost one policeman and we have made four arrests. I think we can use them to get more information and work on that," he said. Police found four other explosive devices in Jos, which they deactivated, he added.

President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south who is struggling to contain the threat of Islamist militancy, called the incidents "unfortunate" but said Boko Haram would "not be (around) for ever. It will end one day."

The White House condemned "this senseless violence and tragic loss of life on Christmas Day."

Longtime Langston University president Ernest Holloway dies

Holloway, who was being treated for stomach cancer in Texas, died Saturday afternoon, said Currie Ballard, former university historian in residence. He was 81.

Holloway worked for 40 years of service to Langston, a historically black university, where he rose from assistant registrar to become the 14th president in 1979.

Before becoming president, Holloway had served as the school's registrar, a professor, vice president of administration and dean of student affairs. Holloway also was a student at Langston.

Holloway was inducted into the Oklahoma Educators Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2002 he was presented with the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund Education Leadership Award, which recognized Holloway as a leader in education.

Before he took over as president, the university had five presidents in less than 10 years and during that time there was talk of closing the school. Holloway brought stability to Lang-ston, which was created in 1897 as the Colored Agricultural and Normal University. It was the first and only state college to be designated by race.

"If he had stumbled as president of Langston, there wouldn't be Lang-ston as we know it," Ballard said.

"He's the only person I've ever known in a high position of authority to have an open-door policy. If you were an alumnus, he had the same policy at his home," he said.

"He was just an extraordinary personality and leader," former Gov. David Walters said Saturday. "I really enjoyed working with him while I was in office."

Walters, who served as governor from 1991-95, said he enjoyed Holloway's good-natured lobbying "for all things Langston."

Walters recalled that during one of the commencement speeches he gave at Langston it seemed especially warm inside.

"I couldn't help but think Ernest may have actually turned the heat up in the gymnasium which he was lobbying to try to get us to air condition," Walters said. "We were all sweating so profusely. We found a way to get the gymnasium air-conditioned shortly thereafter. He kidded about the heat, of course, but made his point."

Holloway also worked to improve Oklahoma 33 between Guthrie and Coyle, including a span that runs north of Langston University, which is named the Dr. Ernest L. Holloway Highway.

Holloway and others complained that the former two-lane highway from Guthrie to Coyle was unsafe, putting Langston students and their families at risk. Walters said work on getting money for the improvements started under his administration; funding came during the administration of his successor, Frank Keating.

"That created a new front door for Langston University," Walters said. "It changed the complexion of the campus and made it a lot safer place for the kids to get back and forth to. That was a big deal for Ernest to finally get that done."

Rep. Mike Shelton, a 1996 graduate of Langston, worked for a year in Holloway's office while a student.

"He was the biggest advocate Langston had," said Shelton, D-Oklahoma City. "He truly bled orange and blue. He understands the time to fight and he understands the time for compromise and he would never put Langton second to any university in the state of Oklahoma."

Holloway is survived by sons Ernest Holloway Jr., of Beaumont, Texas, Norman Holloway, of Kansas City, Mo., and Reginald Holloway, of Richmond, Texas, as well as several grandchildren.

Christmas attacks in Nigeria by sect kill 39

(AP) ? Terror attacks across Nigeria by a radical Muslim sect killed at least 39 people Sunday, with the majority dying on the steps of a Catholic church after celebrating Christmas Mass as blood pooled in dust from a massive explosion.

Authorities acknowledged they could not bring enough emergency medical personnel to care for the wounded outside St. Theresa Catholic Church in Madalla near Nigeria's capital. Elsewhere, a bomb exploded amid gunfire in the central Nigeria city of Jos and a suicide car bomber attacked the military in the nation's northeast as part of an apparently coordinated assault by the sect known as Boko Haram.

The Christmas Day violence, denounced by world leaders and the Vatican, shows the threat of the widening insurrection posed by Boko Haram against Nigeria's weak central government. Despite a recent paramilitary crackdown against the sect in the oil-rich nation, it appears that Africa's most populous nation remains unable to stop the threat.

The White House condemned what it called a "senseless" attack, offered its condolences to the Nigerian people and pledged to assist authorities in bringing those responsible to justice.

In a statement, Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague said, "These are cowardly attacks on families gathered in peace and prayer to celebrate a day which symbolises harmony and goodwill towards others.".

The first explosion on Sunday struck St. Theresa Catholic Church just after 8 a.m. The attack killed 35 people and wounded another 52, said Slaku Luguard, a coordinator with Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency.

Though billions of dollars of oil money flow into the nation's budget yearly, Luguard's agency could only send text messages to journalists asking for their help in getting more ambulances.

Those wounded filled the cement floors of a nearby government hospital, with television images showing them crying in pools of their own blood. Corpses lined an open-air morgue.

The bombing and the delayed response drew anger from those gathering around the church after the blast. The crowd initially blocked emergency workers from the blast site, only allowing them in after soldiers arrived.

"We're trying to calm the situation," Luguard said. "There are some angry people around trying to cause problems."

In Jos, a second explosion struck near the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church, state government spokesman Pam Ayuba said. Gunmen later opened fire on police guarding the area, killing one officer, he said. Two other locally made explosives were found in a nearby building and disarmed.

By noon Sunday, explosions echoed through the streets of Damaturu, the capital of Yobe state where fighting between security forces and the sect already had killed at least 61 people in recent days. The most serious attack on Sunday came when a suicide bomber detonated a car loaded with explosives at the state headquarters of Nigeria's secret police, the State Security Service.

The bomber killed three people in the blast, though the senior military commander apparently targeted survived the attack, the State Security Service said in a statement.

After the bombings, a Boko Haram spokesman using the nom de guerre Abul-Qaqa claimed responsibility for the attacks in an interview with The Daily Trust, the newspaper of record across Nigeria's Muslim north. The sect has used the newspaper in the past to communicate with public.

Boko Haram has carried out increasingly sophisticated and bloody attacks in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria, a multiethnic nation of more than 160 million people. The group, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, is responsible for at least 504 killings this year alone, according to an Associated Press count.

This Christmas attack comes a year after a series of Christmas Eve bombings in Jos claimed by the militants left at least 32 dead and 74 wounded. The group also claimed responsibility for the Aug. 26 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Nigeria's capital Abuja that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others.

The sect came to national prominence in 2009, when its members rioted and burned police stations near its base of Maiduguri, a dusty northeastern city on the cusp of the Sahara Desert. Nigeria's military violently put down the attack, crushing the sect's mosque into shards as its leader was arrested and died in police custody. About 700 people died during the violence.

While initially targeting enemies via hit-and-run assassinations from the back of motorbikes after the 2009 riot, violence by Boko Haram now has a new sophistication and apparent planning that includes high-profile attacks with greater casualties. That has fueled speculation about the group's ties as it has splintered into at least three different factions, diplomats and security sources say. They say the more extreme wing of the sect maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia.

Targeting the group has remained difficult, as sect members are scattered throughout northern Nigeria and nearby Cameroon, Chad and Niger. Analysts say political considerations also likely play a part in the country's thus-far muted response: President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south, may be hesitant to use force in the nation's predominantly Muslim north.

In a statement, Jonathan condemned the blasts as a "unwarranted affront on our collective safety and freedom."

"I want to reassure all Nigerians that government will not relent in its determination to bring to justice all the perpetrators of today's acts of violence and all others before now," Jonathan said.

However, Jonathan has made the same promises after a series of spiraling attacks by the group. His spokesman, Reuben Abati, defended the president by saying the country planned to spend more on security and had made arrests targeting the group.

"The administration is very determined to address this new threat of terrorism that seems to have slipped into our environment," Abati told the AP.

But anger continues to grow over the sect's apparent ability to strike at will ? anger that could be seen at St. Theresa Catholic Church. After the blast, someone picked up a burnt piece of wood to scrawl: "Revolution now in the country" on its cement walls.

Ontario town has 'holiday' tree: Mayor

INNISFIL, Ont. ? While the mayor of this Ontario town will be celebrating Christmas, she says the tree up in Town Hall is a holiday tree.

?We work in a secular environment ? religion doesn't enter into a government building. We wanted to make it an inclusive celebration for everybody," Mayor Barb Baguley said.

?I don't have a problem wishing people a Merry Christmas, and I have my own personal celebration of Christmas, but in the government office, I have a profound respect for all cultures in our community. So we're calling it a holiday tree.?

The donated tree has decorations from local school children.

Elmer Spring, of Spring Tree Farms, donated the tree and said he can't understand why they'd ask him to donate a Christmas tree and then call it something else.

?I find it kind of pathetic that they'd say to people, 'Come see our holiday tree,'? said Spring. ?We gave them a Christmas tree, they asked the kids to decorate it like a Christmas tree. That's what it is.?

Pope laments Christmas consumerism

Pope Benedict XVI decried the increasing commercialization of Christmas as he celebrated Christmas Eve Mass on Saturday night, urging the faithful to look beyond the holiday's "superficial glitter" to discover its true meaning.

Benedict presided over the service in a packed St. Peter's Basilica, kicking off an intense two weeks of Christmas-related public appearances that will test the 84-year-old pontiff's stamina amid signs that fatigue is starting to slow him down.

The Christmas Eve Mass was moved up to 10 p.m. from midnight several years ago to spare the pope a late night that is followed by an important Christmas Day speech. In a new concession this year, Benedict processed down the basilica's central aisle on a moving platform to spare him the long walk.

Benedict appeared tired by the end of the Mass and a dry cough interrupted his homily.

In his homily, Benedict lamented that Christmas has become an increasingly commercial celebration that obscures the simplicity of the message of Christ's birth.

"Let us ask the Lord to help us see through the superficial glitter of this season, and to discover behind it the child in the stable in Bethlehem, so as to find true joy and true light," he said.

It was the second time in as many days that Benedict has pointed to the need to rediscover faith to confront the problems facing the world today. In his end-of-year meeting with Vatican officials on Thursday, Benedict said Europe's financial crisis was largely "based on the ethical crisis looming over the Old Continent."

Benedict officially kicked off Christmas a few hours before the evening Mass, lighting a candle in his studio window overlooking St. Peter's Square in a sign of peace, as crowds gathered to witness the unveiling of the Vatican's larger-than-life sized nativity scene.

Story: Thousands pack Bethlehem for Christmas

Security was tight for the evening Mass, as it has been in recent years. There was no word of any repeat of the 2008 and 2009 Christmas Eve security breaches, in which a woman with a history of psychiatric problems and wearing a telltale red sweat shirt jumped the wooden security barrier along the basilica's central aisle and lunged for the pope.

In 2008, the pope's security detail blocked her from getting to Benedict. But in 2009, she managed to grab Benedict's vestments and pulled him to the ground. The pope was unhurt and continued along with the service, but a French cardinal who was nearby fell and broke his hip.

On Sunday, Benedict will deliver his traditional "Urbi et Orbi" speech, Latin for "to the city and the world," from the central loggia of St. Peter's overlooking the piazza. Usually, the speech is a survey of sorts of the hardships and wars confronting humanity. He's also due to deliver Christmas greetings in dozens of languages.

Next weekend, he'll preside over a New Year's Eve vespers service, followed by a New Year's Day Mass. A few days later he'll celebrate Epiphany Mass followed by his traditional baptizing of babies in the Vatican's frescoed Sistine Chapel.

Do You Know What Happens to Your Cellphone When You're Done with It?

DURBAN, South Africa?I rented a cellphone during my sojourn here to cover the recent climate change negotiations. A local number enabled me to keep in touch with home and office but also, perhaps more importantly, to make appointments on the fly with ever harried international negotiators. The Nokia 2330?which was dubbed, affectionately, my ?hellphone? by a colleague for its generally poor reception and abilities?had clearly lived a useful (and hard) life, most recently in the hands of a smiling white-haired lady of European descent who left her picture on the welcoming screen (so much for data privacy). The phone still listed several of her friends? information as well, a potential goldmine had I been a cybercriminal on the make.

The battered Nokia represents an ever-growing trend in the world of electronics?a second or even third life for gadgets. Such ?recycling? is, in part, what has enabled cellphone technology to leapfrog traditional phone lines in South Africa and elsewhere in the developing world?from cellphone banking to entrepreneurial solar enterprises for cellphone charging. But it has also put millions of people at risk for cybercrime attacks. Even more worrying, ultimately, it?s a major source of toxic pollution.

M.I.T. researchers tracked e-waste on its travels across the U.S. as well as programmed some refurbished laptops to track their own second lives, the results of which can be seen in this video:

?We can now judge for ourselves if our donated computers really find a new home, or if our e-waste is proving harmful,? says David Lee, a programmer for the MIT project.

In fact, e-waste is one of the fastest growing sources of toxic pollution here in Africa and other parts of the world. Ghana, for example, receives shipments of old electronics under the guise of ?donations? that are then dumped in massive yards in the slums of Agbogbloshie in the capital city, Accra. The Ghanian government reports that in 2009 alone, 215,000 metric tons of electronics were imported from the E.U. and U.S., 15 percent of which immediately became trash (unlike my rented cellphone) in places like Agbogbloshie.

There workers, including children, extract the precious metals such as copper inside, by hand or by burning the surrounding plastics. Recycling 100,000 cellphones could yield more than $250,000 worth of precious metals?as well as leading to heavy metal poisoning and toxic air pollution, according to United Nations University research. A recent soil sampling at local schools and the produce market in Agbogbloshie found chromium levels more than two times higher than international safety standards and lead levels 12 times higher. Those problems aren?t confined to Ghana either?chemicals used in electronics are routinely found in American blood and urine samples by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, thanks to electronics dumped here. Plus, due to such imports, the U.S. State Department ranks Ghana as one of the top sources of cybercrime, thanks to the personal information often lingering on trashed electronics.

According to the Basel Convention, 400 million metric tons of e-waste are produced globally every year. Americans own some 3 billion electronic gadgets, ranging from cellphones to computers, of which roughly 400 million get replaced every year. As a result, the U.S. alone produces 372 million gadgets? worth of waste, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Some 85 percent of that e-waste?which contains everything from brominated fire retardants that bioaccumulate to the same heavy metals found in Agbogbloshie?is simply dumped in local landfills. A further quarter of a billion gadgets sit in ?storage??corporate warehouses or desk drawers?waiting to join this fast-growing waste stream. Just think of the number of television remote controls used in an average lifetime, or the Zip drive (or even?remember these?floppy disks) moldering in the garage.

Roughly 14 percent of U.S. e-waste is ?recycled,? which too often means shipped to developing countries like Ghana, or otherwise improperly disposed of, according to an April 2011 report ?Tackling High-Tech Trash? by Demos, a non-partisan public policy research and advocacy organization based in New York City. ?Producers in this very profitable industry need to take more responsibility for the disposal costs that, to this point, have been borne largely by local communities and the environment,? Demos program director Lew Day said when the report was released.

One clear solution is to recycle responsibly. Companies like LG Electronics have committed to use only e-Stewards-certified recyclers?the certification standard run by the Basel Action Network that forbids exporting hazardous e-waste, among other criteria. Waste Management and Electronic Recyclers International run e-Stewards?certified recycling centers across the U.S., part of a U.S. electronics recycling industry that collected and processed 3.5 million tons of used electronics in 2010. ?A robust electronics recycling industry in America would create new opportunities to efficiently and profitably address a growing pollution threat,? said EPA administrator Lisa Jackson at an event in Austin, Tex., this past July to announce new federal guidelines for managing e-waste, given that the U.S. government is the single largest consumer of electronics.

On the global front, on October 21, the 178 countries that are party to the Basel Convention agreed to ban all exports of hazardous wastes from developed to developing countries, including e-waste?an agreement expected to take effect in a few years, though the U.S. has not signed on to the international effort. In fact, U.S. federal efforts to cope with e-waste do not include a ban on such export. U.S. policy ?does nothing to prevent e-waste exporting, which squanders our critical metals resources, and poisons children abroad while exporting good recycling jobs from our country,? argues Jim Puckett, director of the Basel Action Network.

Another solution might be to change the business model of the electronics industry, from planned obsolescence to heirloom gadgets. Think a watch that can be handed from father to son, rather than a cellphone that demands to be swapped annually. That may not prove too palatable to major electronics manufacturers, however, which is why, by and large, they support ?responsible recycling? initiatives or have implemented takeback programs like Apple?s or Sony?s, and better design efforts, such as Stanford University?s move to make a laptop that is more recyclable. Ideally, better design would include modular designs that can be upgraded, perhaps as simply as switching a SIM card allows one to swap phone numbers. ?It?s very hard to narrow in on a component to swap,? Lorie Wigle, general manager of Intel?s eco-tech office, told me this past June. ?There?s a consumer problem,? given the appeal of new designs. But just think of the waste (and headache) savings if all rechargeable devices could be charged by one universal charger and transformer, perhaps with a set of adapter plugs.

In order to facilitate recycling, it would also make sense to make it easier for consumers to remove personal data from now-unwanted devices?and to make far more clear the best possible programs for free recycling. That way one little old lady?s discarded cellphone could find a useful second life anywhere in the world, untroubled by the possibility of a toxic or criminal legacy.

Earth Has Two 'Moons' Right Now, Theorists Say (SPACE.com)

Earth has two moons, a group of scientists . One is that waxing and waning nightlight we all know and love. The other is a tiny asteroid, no bigger than a Smart Car, making huge doughnuts around Earth for a while before it zips off into the distance and is replaced by another.

That's the scenario posited by the scientists in a paper published Dec. 20 in the planetary science journal ICARUS. The researchers argue that there is a space rock at least 1 meter (3.3 feet) wide orbiting Earth at any given time, though it's not always the same rock.

In the scientists' theoretical model, our planet's gravity captures these asteroids as they pass near us on their way around the sun. When one is drawn in, it typically makes three irregularly shaped swings around Earth ? sticking with us for about nine months ? before hurtling on its way.

According to the researchers, surprisingly little attention has been paid to Earth's natural satellites other than the moon, despite the fact that they're sure to exist. "There are lots of asteroids in the solar system, so chances for the Earth to capture one at any time is, in a sense, not surprising," said co-author Jeremie Vauballion, an astronomer at the Paris Observatory in France.

The group claims that its paper is the first effort to theoretically model the orbits and sizes of Earth's temporary second moons. The researchers' results are consistent with observations of one such "temporarily-captured asteroid" that is believed to have orbited Earth for about a year starting in June 2006. The object, labeled 2006 RH120, was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona; estimated to be between 10 and 20 feet (3 and 6 meters) wide, it appeared to be orbiting Earth from two moon-distances away. [What Would Earth Be Like with Two Suns?]

Mikael Gravnik, a physicist at the University of Helsinki and lead author of the new paper, says 2006 RH120 was probably discovered because it was slightly larger than most of the other "temporary moons" that come traipsing through our planetary system. Most of the hobo moons are only about 1 meter wide.

"Objects of this size are too faint to be detected when being at a distance of, say, a few lunar distances from the Earth," Gravnik told Life's Little Mysteries, a sister site to SPACE.com."When coming closer in during their orbit, they are moving too fast to be detected, because the limited amount of photons is spread over too many pixels."

These limitations mean we don't currently have a way of finding our second moons. But an observatory called the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), planned to open in Chile in 2015, could change that.

"We hope that LSST will do something about this, but dedicated programs will without doubt be even better," Vauballion said. "Statistic study is still needed to see where and how to look for them."

NASA's Spaceguard Survey tracks the paths of all near-Earth objects (NEOs) in Earth's neighborhood that are larger than 0.6 miles (1 kilometer) in diameter, but the scientists are less concerned with bodies that are too small to pose a threat to Earth ? as is the case when they're just 1 meter wide.

But if our distant, noncommittal moons don't threaten Earth, and are much too dim to act as nightlights, does it matter that they're there at all?

According to astronomers, it does. Some researchers say it might be possible to go and get one of these temporary moons and bring it back to Earth for analysis.

"When found, such an asteroid will immediately raise the question whether or not we should go, and I'm ready to bet that many astronomers will argue that we definitely have to go!" Vaubaillon said in an email. "The reason is simple: What astronomers would not want to have a full and intact (unaltered by any physical process) piece of space rock? Meteorites are all altered because they go through our atmosphere. The only piece of asteroid we have comes from the Japanese Hayabusa mission (a few grams at the very most). The comet grains the Stardust mission got back from comet Wild 2 were all altered."

Clark Chapman, senior scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo., said a lot could be learned from the retrieval of a temporary satellite. "No doubt it is true that temporarily captured NEOs would be comparatively easy to get to and get back from ? it wouldn't take an especially powerful rocket, and round-trip times would be short," said Chapman, who is an expert on asteroid impact hazards.

Gravnik said, "We certainly hope that a space mission to a natural Earth satellite would someday materialize, and have actually already started a collaboration with experts in spacecraft orbital mechanics to find out how a mission from the Earth to a temporary satellite could be accomplished."

Barry Bonds gets 30-day home sentence ? at worst (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Eight years of being investigated for steroid allegations ended for home run king Barry Bonds on Friday with a 30-day sentence to be served at home. No more ? and maybe less.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston immediately delayed imposing the sentence while Bonds appeals his obstruction of justice conviction. The former baseball star was found guilty in April not of using steroids, but of misleading grand jurors.

Even without prison time, the case has left its mark on the seven-time National League MVP. His 762 career home runs, and 73 homers in 2001, may forever be seen as tainted records, and his ticket to baseball's Hall of Fame is in doubt.

Bonds declined to speak in court. Well-wishers hugged the 47-year-old in the hallway courtroom after the hearing was over, and a smattering of fans cheered him as he left the courthouse. It was a marked departure from his initial court appearance four years ago, when guards had to clear a path for Bonds to get through dozens of onlookers to his SUV.

"Whatever he did or didn't do, we all lie," said Esther Picazo, a fan outside the courthouse. "We all make mistakes. But I don't think he should've gotten any kind of punishment at all."

Bonds was sentenced to two years of probation, 250 hours of community service, a $4,000 fine and 30 days of home confinement. It will take time to determine whether he serves any of it; his appellate specialist, Dennis Riordan, estimated it would take nearly a year and a half for the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to rule.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Parrella called the sentence a "slap on the wrist" and the fine "almost laughable" for a superstar athlete who made more than $192 million for playing baseball.

Parrella had sought 15 months in prison and argued that home confinement wasn't punishment enough "for a man with a 15,000-square-foot house with all the advantages." Bonds lives in a six-bedroom, 10-bath house with a gym and swimming pool.

"The defendant basically lived a double life for decades before this," Parrella said. He ripped Bonds not only over performance-enhancing drugs but over his personal life: "He had mistresses throughout his marriages."

Parrella said Bonds made lots of money due in part to his use of performance enhancers and that he has been "unrepentant" and "unapologetic" about it.

Illston said none of that had any bearing on Bonds' sentencing.

She said she agreed with a probation department report that called Bonds' conviction an "aberration" in his life. She said she received dozens of letters in support of Bonds, some discussing how he has given money and time "for decades" to charitable causes.

Bonds is the last ? and highest-profile ? defendant in the government's investigation of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, or BALCO, a steroids distribution ring. The ex-slugger has long denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs.

Illston said she was compelled to give Bonds a sentence similar to the two she meted out to other figures convicted after trial of lying to the grand jury and federal investigators about their connection to steroids.

The case against Bonds after he testified before the grand jury Dec. 3, 2003. Prosecutors revised his original 2007 indictment several times and spent a year unsuccessfully appealing a key evidentiary ruling before jurors deadlocked in April on three of the four remaining charges related to his grand jury testimony.

On the final charge, the trial jury convicted Bonds of purposely answering questions about steroids with rambling non sequiturs in an attempt to mislead the grand jury.

"I think he probably got off a little easy," said Jessica Wolfram, one of the jurors who convicted Bonds of obstruction. "He was just so clearly guilty, so I actually am happy he got sentenced to something."

Wolfram said she researched the case after the trial and viewed evidence not presented then. After that, she felt even more comfortable that Bonds was guilty.

Besides Bonds, 10 people were convicted of various charges in BALCO cases. Six of them, including track star Marion Jones, were ensnared for lying to grand jurors, federal investigators or the court. Others, including Bonds' personal trainer Greg Anderson, pleaded guilty to steroid distribution charges.

The government's top BALCO investigator, Jeff Novitzky, declined to comment outside the courtroom after attending the hearing.

Bonds was one of two former baseball superstars to stand trial in doping-related cases this year. The trial of pitcher Roger Clemens was halted after just two days in July because prosecutors used inadmissible evidence. U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton has set a new trial for April 17.

Both men will face a different judgment day in 2013, when they'll be eligible for the Hall of Fame.

Gingrich Stalls Out in Iowa (ContributorNetwork)

Newt Gingrich rose from among the ranks to fill the Herman Cain vacuum in recent weeks. It seemed like the timing couldn't have been better either, with the Iowa GOP Caucus date set for January 3rd. But in the past few days, the unstoppable Gingrich momentum in the state has faltered in the glare of the national media spotlight, leaving many to wonder if he didn't peak in Iowa just a few weeks to soon.

According to ABC News just a few days ago Iowa's self-proclaimed voice of family values and failed gubernatorial hopeful, Bob Vander Plaats' received the eagerly awaited response from Gingrich to his evangelical group's request for Newt to sign a 14-point marriage pledge. While Gingrich failed to sigh the document, he did "pledge to uphold the institution of marriage through personal fidelity to my spouse and respect for the marital bonds of others." Today, according to the Des Moines Register, an anonymous group referring to itself as Iowans for Christian Leaders in Government has released a scathing video on YouTube aimed at thwarting a Vander Plaats endorsement of Gingrich. The video uses Vander Plaats' own words of what he expects from a candidate and refutes them with actual news footage from Gingrich's past. In the end, it states that "The Family Leader (Vander Plaats' Group) Cannot Endorse...The Family Leaver," referring to Gingrich's multiple marriages and infidelities.

As the Iowa evangelical community is beginning to pull away from Gingrich, Public Policy Polling has released new data indicating, among other things, that Gingrich is in a statistical tie in Iowa with Ron Paul. Even worse for Gingrich is the favor/unfavorable portion of the poll tracking the 'likeability' factor; a key in determining the outcome of an Iowa caucus (remember Mike Huckabee). When asked if they had a favorable opinion of an individual candidate, Gingrich received just 52% of responses in the affirmative, compared with Paul's 61%. 40% of those polled also indicated that they had an "unfavorable" opinion of Gingrich, compared to 31% who had a similar opinion of Paul.

The bursting Gingrich bubble is not merely an Iowa phenomenon. According to the Washington Post, "Republicans on Capitol Hill are increasingly worried about the potential of a Newt Gingrich presidential nomination, fearful that the former House speaker's reputation for volatility could drive away independent voters and jeopardize GOP prospects for controlling Congress in 2013." The Post went on to state that one GOP strategist has described a Gingrich Presidential nomination as a "train wreck" while Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), refers to a lot of Gingrich's ideas as "Wacko".

With one man polarizing so many within the GOP against each other, it's hard for Democrats to muster a better case scenario for 2012 than a Gingrich nomination. Anyone who can put factions of the evangelical base in Iowa at odds with one another and instill fear into the hearts of his own party leadership must be considered a golden goose for Obama and Democrats. The question is can this goose remain airborne long enough to make it to the January 3rd Iowa Caucus, or will the weight of the Gingrich legacy bring him crashing back down to earth to simply lay another egg of failure in his own sordid wake.
