By a 171-26 vote at their meeting on June 13, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) approved a proposal by Bishop Stephen Blaire, chairman of the bishops? Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, to begin drafting a message on the US economy.
The draft of ?Catholic Reflections on Work, Poverty and a Broken Economy? will be brought to the body of bishops at the conference?s November meeting, after this year?s US presidential elections.
During the discussion leading up to the vote, Bishop Earl Boyea of Lansing criticized the committee's opposition to the budget plan put forward by Congressman Paul Ryan.
?There have been some concerns raised by lay Catholics, especially some Catholic economists, about what was perceived as a partisan action against Congressman Ryan and the budget he had proposed,? Bishop Boyea said in reference to the USCCB committee?s opposition to the House budget plan. ?We need to be articulate only in principles, and let the laity make these applications ? It was perceived as partisan, and thus didn?t really further dialogue in our deeply divided country.?
?I?m not sure that we have the humility yet not to stray into areas where we lack competence, and where we need to let the laity take the lead,? he added. ?We need to learn far more than we need to teach in this area. We need to listen more than we need to speak. We already have an excellent, fine Compendium [on the Social Doctrine of the Church].?
Following his remarks, Archbishop Allen Vigneron of Detroit called upon the committee to place greater emphasis on the ?disintegration of the family? as a factor in the breakdown of the economy.
Echoing Bishop Boyea?s comments, Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City said that the committee is ?at times perceived as partisan? and needs to consider the principle of subsidiarity, which has been ?neglected in past documents.? Archbishop Naumann added that solutions that place emphasis in enrolling people in government programs have been ?tried for decades? and failed.
?We need to talk about the debt and the real seriousness of that debt,? he continued. ?Sometimes we?re perceived as just encouraging the government to spend more money with no realistic way of how we?re going to afford to do this.?

It didn?t take long for the governor?s race in North Carolina to turn ugly. Although it?s only June, Republican Pat McCrory and Democrat Walter Dalton both find themselves under attack from outside groups spending heavily on misleading TV ads:
A Democratic group claims McCrory, a former mayor of Charlotte, ?used his position as mayor to lobby state government for millions in tax breaks? for a company that paid him ?over $140,000 to sit on its board.? That?s a distortion. McCrory asked the state to help prevent Lending Tree from leaving the city for South Carolina. McCrory was not on the company?s board at the time. He did not join until three years later.
In another ad, the same group accuses McCrory of ?questionable ethics? for traveling ?to Washington to testify as mayor about a regulation worth $600 million? to his employer, Duke Energy. True, but McCrory testified against proposed clean-air regulations as chairman of the Energy and Environment Committee of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which overwhelmingly opposed the proposed rules for fear they would drive industry out of urban areas.
Meanwhile, the Republican Governors Association claims that a sales tax hike supported by Dalton ?will kill 8,000 jobs.? But the ad misrepresents the findings of an economic study, according to its author. The RGA extrapolated the jobs data from an economic report that studied the impact of reducing the sales tax.
The RGA also claims Dalton has ?consistently voted to raise taxes.? While it is true he has voted to raise some taxes, Dalton has also voted to cut taxes, too, including eliminating both the inheritance tax and sales taxes on food.
The RGA says North Carolina ?has the worst business tax in the South? under Dalton and Gov. Beverly Perdue, citing an annual report by a conservative think tank. But North Carolina had the ?worst business tax in the South? before Dalton and Perdue took office in January 2009, so that?s nothing new.
Case No. 1: Lobbying for Tax Breaks?
North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue, a Democrat, defeated McCrory in 2008 to become the state?s first female governor. But Perdue announced in January that she would not run for reelection. Like Nature, political parties abhor a vacuum and rushed to fill the void. So far, about $2.4 million has been spent on the governor?s race, according to the Campaign Media Analysis Group, a unit of Kantar Media.
North Carolina Citizens for Progress, a nonprofit formed last year and largely funded by the DGA, is one of the most active outside groups in the campaign. It has aired two TV ads attacking ?Pat McCrory?s questionable ethics.? In both cases, the TV ads deal with outside positions McCrory held while serving as mayor of Charlotte. The mayor?s job is a part-time position. It currently pays $22,000, and paid even less when McCrory served from 1996 to 2009.
Citizens for Progress first attacked McCrory in a TV ad titled ?Today?s Tree,? which criticizes him for serving as mayor and sitting on the board of tree.com, the parent company of Lending Tree.?But the ad, which ran from mid-May to late May, distorts the facts.
Liquid glucagon formulation discovered for potential use in artificial pancreas systemsPublic release date: 12-Jun-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

JDRF-funded researchers from Oregon Health and Science University and Legacy Health discovered a method to stabilize liquid glucagon for automated pump delivery
New York, NY, June 12, 2012JDRF-funded researchers at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and Legacy Health have discovered a liquid glucagon formulation that may be useable in standard diabetes pumps. Such a formulation could broaden the use of glucagon to help prevent hypoglycemia in people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) who are treated with insulin. It could also open a path to future-generation artificial pancreas systems that dispense more than just insulin for optimizing glucose control.
"Our previous studies have shown that the injections of small amounts of glucagon prevent hypoglycemia, which is a frequent and serious complication of type 1 diabetes that can lead to seizures, loss of consciousness, and even death," said W. Kenneth Ward, M.D., associate professor of medicine (endocrinology, diabetes, and clinical nutrition) at OHSU School of Medicine and senior scientist at Legacy Health, the two Portland, OR-based organizations that collaborated on the study. The research was presented at the American Diabetes Association's (ADA) 72nd Scientific Sessions on Friday, June 8, and on Sunday, June 10, in Philadelphia.
Dr. Ward continues: "Current forms of glucagon cannot be kept for long periods of time in a portable pump, and therefore could not be used as part of an artificial pancreas system. While it is important to note that additional studies will be undertaken in animals and humans before FDA approval can be sought, we have found that the alkaline glucagon compound we discovered can be kept in liquid form for long periods of time, potentially opening pathways for use in bi-hormonal diabetes pumps and toward better therapies for people with diabetes."
The research is a key step forward toward the routine delivery of glucagon for people with T1D, and toward the development of a multi-hormonal, fully-automated closed loop artificial pancreas system. Such future-generation artificial pancreas systems would automatically deliver both insulin and glucagon, or other drugs.
Glucagon is a naturally occurring hormone that responds to hypoglycemia (extreme low blood sugar) by raising blood sugars, but its regulation is impaired in people with T1D. It works to complement the function of insulin to provide the natural fine-tuning of blood glucose control. Previous studies have shown that the addition of glucagon to insulin treatment reduces the frequency of hypoglycemia in T1D, more closely mimicking the physiology of someone without diabetes.
Commercially available glucagon does not maintain its liquid form after the powder and solution are combined, making it suitable only for immediate use. Dr. Ward and his team found that raising the pH of the glucagon allowed the hormone to maintain liquid form, and concluded that this formulation could be suitable for use in a closed-loop bi-hormonal pump.
"We have seen very promising results in our studies of artificial pancreas systems that utilize both insulin and glucagon. But for people with diabetes to realize this potential benefit, we need glucagon that is stable and can be used in a pump," said Sanjoy Dutta, Ph.D., JDRF's senior director of treat therapies. "Dr. Ward's research is promising and steers us toward more tangible solutions along the path toward a multi-hormonal, fully-automated closed loop artificial pancreas."
The artificial pancreas combines a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and an insulin pump via sophisticated computer software, to provide the right amount of insulin at the right times for people with diabetes. In March, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first artificial pancreas outpatient trial in the United States. Researchers envision future generations of the device to automatically deliver more than one hormone, in addition to insulin, to more closely perform the functions of a non-diabetic human pancreas.

About T1D
In T1D, a person's pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. People with T1D need to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin (with injections or an insulin pump) multiple times every day, and carefully balance insulin doses with eating and daily activities throughout the day and night. However, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, and even with that intensive care, a significant portion of the day is still spent with either high or low blood sugar, placing people with T1D at risk for devastating complications such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, and amputation.

Unrefrigerated brains in preserving solution are stacked high on shelves at the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center at McLean Hospital.
The details sound like something out of a bad science-fiction movie.
A freezer storing human brains for research went on the fritz, and nobody at the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center knew for days. Two separate alarms that should have alerted staff to the problem failed to sound late last month.
By the time one of the managers at the federally funded repository opened the affected freezer May 31, the temperature was well above freezing and 150 brains had begun to thaw. The Boston Globe first reported on the mishap, which looks like a painful blow to autism research.
?
Johns Hopkins neuroscientist Carlos Pardo-Villamizaro told the Globe the damage to the brains in the autism collection could slow research on the disorder by 10 years.
About one-third of the brains in the malfunctioning freezer (one of 24 at the bank) were from people who had been diagnosed with autism, said Adriana Bobinchock, a spokeswoman at McLean Hospital, site of the brain bank. "Yes, this is a significant loss, but there's still a lot available for autism research," she told Shots.

She said 32 of the 54 brains from people with autism had been divided in two, with one hemisphere preserved in formalin without refrigeration and the other in the freezer. The brain portions in formalin were unaffected and remain available for researchers. Those that thawed in the malfunctioning freezer may still be useful for some kinds of analysis.
Bobinchock said the brain bank is investigating the cause of the incident. "We've never seen a failure like this before," she said, but she downplayed the notion that foul play could have been involved. The freezers are under 24-hour surveillance, and there are multiple security checkpoints that anyone seeking access has to pass.
Recently, researchers using high-tech imaging technology have found that the brains of people living with autism are different from those without the disorder. Areas at the front and back of the brain, for instance, don't work in synchrony as they should. That snafu can make it harder for people with autism to recognize faces, as NPR's Jon Hamilton reported earlier this month.
