Researchers find strange new nanoregion can form in quasicrystals

A team of international researchers has discovered a new type of structural anomaly, or defect, that can appear in quasicrystals, a unique material with some crystal-like properties but a more complex structure.

Pat Thiel, senior chemist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory, led the international team, which includes scientists from the Institut Jean Lamour at Nancy-Universit? in France.

In crystals, a "defect" refers to any departure from perfect structural symmetry. While the term suggests an undesirable quality, not all defects are bad; many control or influence key material properties, such as chemical purity, mechanical strength, conductivity, color, corrosivity or surface properties. Rubies, for instance, are red due to a defect that turns an otherwise non-descript crystal into a valuable gem.

Quasicrystals were already known to have a type of defect called a phason flip, which can form at the surface. The new defect type was discovered after researchers observed mysterious nano-sized areas on quasicrystal surfaces. Unlike the phason flip, however, the new defect type extends beyond the surface region and into the bulk of the quasicrystal.

"Quasicrystals are such fascinating materials ? they seem to always exhibit features that are unexpected, starting with their very existence," said Thiel, who is also Iowa State University's John D. Corbett Distinguished Professor of Chemistry.

It wasn't until 1982, in fact, when Dan Shechtman observed the seemingly impossible ? a well-defined but non-repeating arrangement of atoms under his electron microscope ? that quasicrystals were found to exist. It took even longer for the scientific community to accept their existence. Shechtman, a materials scientist with Ames Lab, Iowa State University and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, won the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery.

The recent discovery of the new defect type shows quasicrystals are still yielding surprises. While the nanodomain defect isn't always present ? it only occurs under certain circumstances to help balance competing energetic issues ? its formation at those times enables higher-energy transition-metal-rich surfaces to be exposed rather than the expected lower-energy aluminum-rich surfaces.

Because nanostructures show promise for use in a range of applications, from medical to electronics, understanding the relationship between surface and bulk defects in materials may yield greater insights into why nanostructures are often unusually strong.

"It's already known that in nanowires, their strength is related to the fact that the surface can 'erase' the bulk defects," Thiel said. "But then eventually under extreme conditions even a nanowire can fail, and the surface seems to play a role in that event as well. So the relationship between surface and bulk defects really is very important."

While Pernod Ricard?s 8% net sales growth to ?4.61 billion ($6b) in the six months through December was driven largely by an 18% surge in its emerging market business (identical to rival Diageo?s), Pernod?s U.S. net sales also enjoyed a healthy uptick, rising 5% over the period. An exclusive analysis from Impact Databank reveals that Pernod?s high-flying Jameson Irish whiskey brand, along with a revitalized Malibu rum, offset U.S. volume declines for Absolut vodka, Seagram?s gin and Chivas Regal Scotch in calendar 2011.

Jameson?s spectacular rise in the U.S. market continues to be one of the drinks industry?s top stories. The fact that the super-premium ($25) Irish whiskey actually picked up speed during the recession?more than tripling in volume since 2006 and prospering in the on-premise all through the downturn?testifies to its brand cachet among trend-setting spirits consumers.

Malibu?s renewed strength in the U.S. market is a more recent trend. Not long ago, both Malibu and Kahl?a were seen as turnaround projects for Pernod Ricard USA. Kahl?a continues to struggle, slipping below 1 million cases in 2011 for the first time in decades. But Malibu, boosted by playful new ad positioning, returned to volume growth in 2010 and then advanced by nearly 7% last year, breaking the 1.7-million-case threshold for the first time.

Pernod aims to keep Jameson and Malibu consumers engaged by innovating on each with new extensions. Jameson?s Black Barrel ($35) was introduced last fall, while Malibu Red, a rum-Tequila hybrid selling at a premium to the core brand?s $14 a bottle, is slated for an upcoming release. (Malibu Red follows two other variants including higher-alcohol Malibu Black, and a seasonal Malibu Winter offering accented by coconut flakes swirling in the liquid).

The Glenlivet?the leading single malt Scotch brand in the U.S.?continued its steady upward progress last year, rising 6.5%, but work remains to be done in the rest of Pernod?s Scotch stable. Chivas Regal had halted its long-term U.S. slide in 2010 with a modest increase, but last year it slowed again, declining by 1.3%. Chivas has lost nearly 20% of its U.S. volume since 2005. During that time period, archrival Johnnie Walker has grown by around 10% in the U.S. market.

More troubling for Pernod USA may be the halt in progress for its largest brand, Absolut. After a buoyant 2010 in which it added about 150,000 cases in U.S. sales, Absolut, under pressure from proliferating ?cheap-chic? vodkas like Svedka, Pinnacle and Sobieski, surrendered 60,000 cases in 2011, with trends deteriorating over the second half of the year. Pernod Ricard CEO Pierre Pringuet said today that the group intends to turn up Absolut?s volume with a new U.S. campaign in March, as well as new extensions Absolut Grapevine and Absolut Miami. But even as the economy suggests it may begin to put some wind behind brands like Absolut, competition in the vodka category appears only to be getting stiffer.

Colorado civil union bill advances toward showdown (AP)

DENVER ? Gay couples waiting for rights similar to those afforded to married couples got closer on Wednesday to a legislative showdown with Colorado Republicans after a Senate committee approved civil unions legislation after hours of emotional testimony.

Hundreds of people packed a hearing room at the Capitol to plead with lawmakers to give them legal protections traditional couples enjoy. The issue has gained traction as more states have recently passed either civil union or gay marriage laws.

Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper urged lawmakers to pass civil unions during his State of the State speech last month, and more Republicans have expressed public support for the measure.

The bill, passed on a 5-2 vote with one Republican senator joining Democrats, is expected to easily clear the full Senate. The real challenge will be in the Republican-controlled House.

Shauna Kempainnen and Lisa Green urged lawmakers to allow them to have a civil union, describing the medical struggles of Green, who has multiple sclerosis.

"Truthfully, I need to know that Shauna can have what she needs to care for me," Green said. She said it's "inhumane" that she and her partner don't have the same legal protections as married couples.

"Every moment that I can spend with Lisa feels like poetry," Kempainnen said, adding that it's wrong for the government "limit how far we can go on our journey."

The bill addresses parental rights and child support when a same-sex couple separates. The bill would also grant same-sex couples other rights similar to what exist in a traditional marriage, such as the ability to be involved in their partner's medical and end-of-life decisions. It also would enhance inheritance and property rights.

Republican Sen. Kevin Lundberg, one of the opponents of the bill, said it undermines traditional marriage and goes against the wishes of Colorado voters, who banned gay marriage in 2006. He said the bill states civil unions are not marriage, but goes on to list marriage rights gay people would have.

"Do you not see that as being a legal jiu-jitsu to simply get around the term?" Lungberg asked Democratic Sen. Pat Steadman, a gay lawmaker from Denver who is sponsoring the bill. Lundberg asked Steadman if he would be satisfied with civil unions, or whether it was the first step to overturning the state's ban on gay marriage.

"I can tell you Sen. Lundberg that if this bill passes, I will avail myself of it," Steadman said. "I am a member of the class of unmarried persons who are eligible for this relationship, and it is one that I would seek. Beyond that, I cannot predict. The arc of history is one that bends toward justice," he said, triggering applause from the couple of hundred people in the room.

Steadman co-sponsored similar legislation that cleared the Senate with bipartisan support before being rejected in the House. That's where the bill's fate is expected to be decided again this year. House Republicans who oppose the bill hold a one-vote majority.

Republican House Speaker Frank McNulty has said he opposes the bill, but promises that it will get a fair hearing.

Opponents testifying in opposition to the bill used harsh language to say they believe homosexuality is wrong. They also worried that civil unions diminish traditional marriage.

"Anything that lessens (traditional marriage) lessens society at large. Marriage is the cornerstone of society," said the Rev. Bill Carmody, with Catholic Diocese of Colorado Springs.

More than a dozen states allow either civil unions or same-sex marriage. The governor of Washington state signed a bill legalizing gay marriage Monday, and the New Jersey Senate passed a similar measure the same day. Both face challenges before the laws would take effect.

And civil union laws took effect this month in Hawaii and Delaware.

"It's encouraging to see people rise above the political fray to respect the dignity of my family," said Jason Cobb, a 37-year-old Denver attorney who has been in a 14-year relationship with Jason Prussman, 38. They have a 4-year-old son.

Cobb said passing the legislation will be a positive reinforcement for their child.

"And making sure that he knows that he has a secure family and that we offer them unconditional love and sense of security," he said.

Iran claims major steps to nuclear self-sufficiency

Updated at 9:55 a.m. ET: Iran claimed Wednesday that it has taken two major steps toward mastering the production of nuclear fuel, a defiant move in response to increasingly tough Western sanctions over its controversial nuclear program.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, meanwhile, said that Iran was destabilizing the world.

Israel has accused Iran of waging a campaign of state terror and has threatened military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, while Iran has blamed the Jewish state for the recent killings of Iranian atomic scientists. Iran has denied responsibility for three bombing incidents this week.

In Iran, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad oversaw the insertion of the first Iranian domestically-made fuel rod into a research reactor in northern Tehran, the country's official IRNA news agency reported.

Separately, the semiofficial Fars agency reported that a "new generation of Iranian centrifuges" had been installed and had gone into operation at the country's main uranium enrichment facility at Natanz in central Iran.

The West suspects Iran's nuclear program is aimed at producing atomic weapons, a charge Tehran denies, insisting it's geared for peaceful purposes only, such as energy production.

The crisis has already resulted in sanctions placed on Iran's economy, and there are fears that it could escalate to military action.

Iran: Nuclear facilities immune to cyber attack

Iran's nuclear announcements came as the country said Wednesday it halted oil exports to six European countries ? the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, France, Greece and Portugal ? in response to recent new European Union sanctions.

Iran has said it is forced to manufacture nuclear fuel rods, which provide fuel for reactors, on its own since international sanctions ban it from buying them on foreign markets. In January, Iran said it had produced its first such fuel rod.

IRNA boasted that the nuclear fuel announcement is the final step in the entire cycle of nuclear fuel ? from extracting uranium ore to producing the finished rods.

In Thailand, two explosions tore through a busy neighborhood in Bangkok where police caught two Iranian nationals. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

'Terror operations'
Israel's Netanyahu reiterated claims that Iran was behind explosions this week that targeted Israeli diplomats in India and the former Soviet republic of Georgia, as Israeli officials strongly suggested Iran was behind bomb blasts in Bangkok Tuesday.

"If this aggression isn't halted, ultimately it will spread to many other countries," Netanyahu said.

"Iran's terror operations are now exposed for all to see," Netanyahu added, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. "Iran is undermining the world's stability and harms innocent diplomats. World countries must condemn Iran's terror acts and draw a red line."

On Monday in New Delhi, an explosion tore through an Israeli diplomatic vehicle, wounding the driver and a diplomat's wife, according to Indian officials.

On the same day in the former Soviet republic of Georgia, authorities say attackers planted an explosive device on the car of a driver for the Israeli Embassy, but it was discovered and defused before it went off.

?Meanwhile, Thailand's government was struggling to piece together what three Iranian men were plotting when a cache of explosives detonated by mistake in their home in Bangkok's busy Sukhumvit Road area Tuesday.

Police released images of? three suspects, two of whom were arrested in Thailand, while a third was detained in Malaysia Wednesday.

Bangkok blasts wound Iranian attacker, 4 others

Israel's ambassador to Thailand, Itzhak Shoha, said Wednesday that homemade "sticky" bombs discovered in a Bangkok house after the accidental blast were similar to devices used in India and Georgia, building on his country's claims the incidents are part of a covert terror campaign by Iran.

"They are similar to the ones used in Delhi and in Tbilisi," Shoham said. "From that we can assume that there is the same network of terror." That and the arrests of Iranians in Thailand "again leaves not too much room to assume who was behind it," Shoham said.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast called the allegations "baseless," saying Israel was trying to damage its relations with Thailand and fuel "conspiracy" theories.

Thai bomb disposal teams searched the Iranians' house again Wednesday looking for more evidence.

Two of the men were initially detained but Thai immigration police chief Lt. Gen. Wiboon Bangthamai said a third suspect, named as Masoud Sedaghatzadeh, had flown to Malaysia.

The man boarded a flight bound for Kuala Lumpur Tuesday night, Bangthamai said.

However on Wednesday, police in Malaysia said the third suspect had been arrested.

Security forces in Thailand were also searching for an Iranian woman who they said had originally rented the house.

Confessions?
Late Tuesday, Israel's Channel 10 TV quoted unidentified Thai authorities as saying the captured Iranians confessed to targeting Israeli interests.

Thai police have named the Iranian pair in custody as Saeid Moradi, who lost at least one leg in a self-inflicted grenade blast as he tried to flee police, and Mohummad Hazaei, who was detained Tuesday as he tried to board a flight to Malaysia.

Both men are now facing four criminal charges, including possession of explosives, attempted murder, attempted murder of a policeman and causing explosions that damaged property.

Israel accuses Iran of bombings in India, Georgia

Top security agencies called a news conference in which authorities acknowledged to being caught by surprise and said they had little information about who the alleged attackers were or their possible targets.

National Security Council chief Wichean Potephosree said the government had not yet determined if there was any link between the events in Bangkok, New Delhi and Tbilisi.

"We haven't found any links but we are still investigating," Wichean said. "We admit there was magnetic component, aiming at individuals, but the origin of the magnets still has to be investigated."

KPMG recently released the results of its global 4Q11 Sourcing Advisory Pulse Survey. The Pulse surveys provide insights into trends and projections in end-user organizations? usage of global business services (GBS). The learnings are gleaned from KPMG firms? advisers, who are working closely with enterprises that are actively exploring or undertaking GBS initiatives, as well as from leading global business and IT service providers. This quarter?s Pulse analyzed general market GBS market activity, trends, and global sourcing in 4Q11, and offered top business trends and predictions for 2012.

The providers polled this quarter were, as in 3Q11, less bullish regarding new deal pipeline growth projections (see figure below).

• Sixty-one percent of service providers cited pipeline growth over the past quarter, a drop of 15 percent from 3Q11. It is important to note that the Pulse surveys measure change in pipeline growth levels, not absolute pipeline size or revenue levels.
• Only forty-five percent of providers expected the pace of customer demand for business and IT services to increase over the next one to two quarters, a drop of 14 percent from last quarter and 29 percent from 2Q11. This is indicative of a slow start to 2012 for both outsourcing demand and related business and IT services demand.

The challenge with interpreting these results is understanding what is in the pipeline and, indeed, even what is being defined as ?outsourcing.? While there is general consensus that demand growth for third-party services has slowed, especially for traditional, horizontal BPO and for project-based consulting, outsourcing remains a core component of buyers? GBS strategies and portfolios. But the nature of typical outsourcing deals is changing, often becoming more focused and strategic as well as including new(er) delivery models such as cloud. While buyers have become less aggressive in pursuing broad scale global outsourcing deals, the overall pace of adoption remains brisk.

The growth in outsourcing demand has not followed the same path and trajectory that it did when the global economy was coming out of the last recession in the 2003?2004 time frame, a period in which both BPO and offshore outsourcing growth was significant. There are several reasons for this:

• the market and its buyers are more mature
• more low-hanging outsourcing fruit (e.g., bloated IT organizations, legacy homegrown IT environments, and excessive cost models) has been picked
• there are more alternative service delivery options (e.g., cloud and BPO point solutions) from which buyers can choose
• economic uncertainty continues to make longer-term, broader-scale planning (and outsourcing) challenging for many buyers.

Quick and big wins via outsourcing are fewer and farther between, and buyers and providers are smarter, more experienced, and less likely to enter into larger and more risky deals.

This is not a bad thing. Executive buyer focus today is how to get more strategic value and innovation from outsourcing via more collaborative outsourcing relationships that are more akin to business alliances rather than client/vendor relationships. Commoditized outsourcing focused on cost savings is still occurring in large volumes, but the greater emphasis and focus is on strategic outsourcing that targets more narrow and value-added activities and is part of an integrated GBS effort, above and beyond commoditized services, though often with the same service provider(s). ?

The challenge for providers is to become more strategic partners and step up to the challenge of delivering cost-effective innovation. The challenge for buyers is to define what innovation they need, map what they need to do internally to achieve it and what they seek from outsourcing, then execute, manage, and govern the effort successfully (the hard part). The bottom line is that the outsourcing market is alive and well, at least for those buyers and providers that can successfully move up the strategic value chain.

Mercedes helps Daimler to 57 pct Q4 profit rise (AP)

FRANKFURT, Germany ? Strong sales of Mercedes luxury cars in China and the United States helped German automaker Daimler AG post a stronger than expected 57 percent increase in fourth quarter profits.

The Stuttgart-based company made net profit of euro1.78 billion ($2.36 billion) during the quarter, ahead of the average forecast compiled by FactSet of euro1.30 billion.

The company also recorded a record profit of euro6.03 billion for the full year, up 29 percent from the year before, and increased its dividend.

But it issued a cautious outlook Thursday, saying next year's profits would only equal this year's and that the debt crisis afflicting the 17-nation eurozone would mean a flat market in Western Europe.

The company's shares traded 3.8 percent higher at euro46.32 in midday trading in Germany.

In 2011 though, Daimler benefited from a strong sales performance of its Mercedes luxury brand, which saw sales jump in two key markets. They were up 42 percent in China and 44 percent in the United States. Operating earnings for the division, however, rose by a more modest 5 percent.

The division's strong sales performance helped overall revenue rise 10 percent to euro29.06 billion from the fourth quarter of 2010, coming in above forecasts of euro27.70 billion.

Daimler's Mercedes van business and its financial services division saw strong operating profit increases.

On a downbeat note, the company said the eurozone debt crisis would weigh on the European auto market, which it expects to remain flat. It said it was looking to Asian emerging markets, Japan and North America for stronger demand.

Overall, Daimler said earnings across all markets before interest and taxes from continuing businesses would only equal this year's performance of euro8.97 billion.

European governments are struggling with a crisis over too much debt in some countries. Fears that a government default may hurt banks and choke off credit to the economy have weighed on consumer spending and business investment.

Even so, Daimler said it expected the Mercedes division to beat its unit sales of 1.38 million this year worldwide.

For the year as a whole, Daimler recorded a net profit of euro6.03 billion, which represented an increase of 29 percent from euro4.49 billion in 2010. Sales for 2012 came in at euro106.54 billion, up 9 percent.

Daimler's workers will get a profit-sharing bonuses of euro4,100 ($5,442) per eligible worker. And the company's shareholders will get around 40 percent of net profit, paid out through a proposed dividend of euro2.20 per share, up from euro1.85 per share last year.
