Golfer Phil Mickelson's win brings up California tax issue

San Diego resident and world-famous golfer Phil Mickelson won a hefty payout for winning the British Open. But he'll also face a heftier tax bill to the state of California, thanks to the way the state now taxes the highest tax bracket. This is a file photo of Mickelson from another event.

From the sports and taxes department, there?s a column today from Forbes about Phil Mickelson?s British Open win in Scotland this past weekend.

Mickelson took home $1.43 million -- in addition to a shiny silver trophy -- for winning the Open. As the Forbes column points out, the golfer and San Diego resident will have to pay California taxes on his prize money. Because he qualifies for several of the state?s highest marginal income brackets ? the highest in the country after voters approved Proposition 30 last November ? Mickelson will probably fork out at least $100,000 in California income taxes from his recent victory.

Why is this story news? As the Forbes piece notes, Mickelson made waves last year by saying he would leave California if voters approved Prop. 30. So far he hasn?t, but his comments still sparked a backlash. But the precedent is there. Tiger Woods apparently left California many years ago for the same reason, according to the Daily Mail. He now lives in Florida, a state that doesn?t have an income tax.

The question is whether someone like Mickelson will now leave California because of the state?s higher income tax. The answer is unclear. Forbes lists a few other stories that say taxes aren?t the only factor for wealthy residents in deciding where to live.

If anything, Mickelson?s win will prompt more discussion about the state?s tax rate and whether wealthy people are leaving California for places like Texas.

Christopher Arns covers state legislation, regulation and contracts, as well as economic news, international trade and economic development for the Sacramento Business Journal.

The Rob Ford Radio Recap: Stalkers and Assassins

politics

Every Sunday, Mayor Rob Ford and his brother, Doug, host The City, a two-hour talk show on Newstalk 1010. We listen so you don't have to.

?attachment id=238307

Rob and Doug Ford in the studio. Photo courtesy of Newstalk 1010.

With Rob out in Winnipeg and Regina on vacation, it?s Doug flying solo today! Will he go off the rails without the moderating influence (really) of his younger brother? Or will he announce a new megaproject? Who knows? Find out below!

1:10: Doug says he?s going to continue to fight for subways, not just for Scarborough, but for the people of Etobicoke, North York, York, and East York too. He then adds that downtowners already have theirs.

1:14: Doug issues a disclaimer: anything he says on the show is not representative of Newstalk 1010 or Mayor Rob Ford. Which is a change from all those times when he speaks on behalf of the mayor, when Rob is unavailable for comment. But it?s not like we can expect consistency or anything.

1:18: Doug, who held two scrums at City Hall this week during which he lambasted the Toronto Star, discusses Star City Hall journalist Robyn Doolittle. ?[She] was stalking my mother, following her around as she was delivering apples to the neighbours.? Now is a good time to mention that Rob and Doug have a very different sense of ?stalking? or ?ambushes? than most public figures. After all, when Global TV reporter Jackson Proskow knocked on the door of the Ford family company, Deco Labels and Tags, to ask Doug if he wanted to do an interview, Doug later called that an ?ambush.? When the Star?s Daniel Dale visited a park behind Rob?s home to better understand a parcel of public land the mayor was trying to purchase, that was ?stalking.? But there?s another, better term for these types of actions, and Doug should understand it. It?s called ?journalism,? and it?s what you get when you?re a powerful public figure who refuses to answer questions in the public interest.

1:19: Doolittle has been doing research down in Florida recently, where the Ford family owns a condo. Because this isn?t enough of a Seinfeld episode already, Doug introduces the president of the condo association, Vito. Vito confirms that he spoke with Doolittle, and describes her as ?pretty? and ?flirty.? He goes on to say that Doolittle had questions about whether Rob ?partied hard? when he was at the condo, and Vito says this is not the case.

1:22: Doug explains the Star?s ?stalking? to Vito. ?This is the Toronto Star, that wants to literally?politically, in my opinion?kill our family, kill Rob, kill myself, because you know something, they just don?t think about reducing the size and cost of government.?

Okay, just to clarify, the Ford family might seem like the Simpsons sometimes, but Robyn Doolittle is not Sideshow Bob, literally or figuratively. Sigh.

1:25: Doug Ford: ?As far as I?m concerned, Robyn Doolittle, you need counselling. You have this obsession?obsession?with our family.? Or, you know, she?s a reporter at City Hall and is trying to understand the greater context of the individuals that ostensibly lead it.

1:38: Newly backbench Conservative MP Peter Kent is on the show, and Doug and he hobnob in that ol?-friends kind of way.

1:45: Clarissa calls in and compliments Doug on being so intelligent on all this subway stuff, but she?s concerned about whether it will be fully funded. Doug assuages her fears by saying that he and his brother already have $1.4 billion for subways, which ignores the fact that this money was just going to be used for an LRT line that represented a better return on investment and served more priority neighbourhoods.

1:50: Peter calls in. He wants the City to do a P3, like Canary Wharf in London. Sure, he says, that project went bankrupt, but it turned out well. Doug agrees. He mentions that Toronto has $18 billion in real-estate assets that could be sold?even though most of the board at Build Toronto, the agency responsible for that process, has resigned, in large part due to Doug?s meddling.

1:54: Perennial Ward 19 council candidate George Sawision calls in and argues that Toronto should be exploring the possibility of using its hydro and rail corridors to connect to the TTC.

1:56: Wisdom from the Tao of Dougie: ?The only bad idea is the idea you don?t come up with.?

1:58: Jennifer from Collingwood thanks Doug for not allowing Karen Stintz (Ward 16, Eglinton-Lawrence) to do a sole-source deal with the TTC?s newsstands. Doug says that the TTC shouldn?t be in the business of retail, and it isn?t. That?s why the TTC has private companies paying it for the right to operate those newsstands.

2:00: Sam thanks Doug and the mayor for saving the city, and says that if it was up to Queen?s Park and the lefties at City Hall, Toronto would be the Detroit of Canada. That this shows a deep misunderstanding of both Detroit?s plight and Toronto?s opportunities highlights what a disconnect there is in communicating Toronto?s success stories and needs.

2:05: OMG, OMG, they?re playing my summer jam, the Rob Ford 80s-style anthem written by a local performer named Jenny James for this year?s Scarborough Ford Fest. Ford is the taxpayer?s lord, the cost cowboy, and the rollback viceroy, you know? With the song playing, Doug announces Etobicoke?s Ford Fest, which will take place in September. He promises people will get their food in a reasonable amount of time.

2:07: Mark calls in and comments on how honest Doug Holyday (Ward 3, Etobicoke Centre) is, and how people need to get out and vote for him in the provincial Etobicoke-Lakeshore byelection. Mark really likes Doug Holyday.

2:10: Bill in Whitby says that our current subway system has segments that go above ground. This is fine, he argues, so why don?t we only go underground when absolutely necessary? Doug agrees. ?You?ve never heard me say it has to stay underground, what you?ve heard me say is it can?t impede traffic, like LRTs do.? Abfvsbihsvdjuihsdjkihusd. Ugh. Headdesk.GIF. That was the Scarborough LRT plan. You know, the one Rob didn?t understand was entirely separated from traffic and wouldn?t stop at any traffic lights? The one Doug criticized at every opportunity, and didn?t seem to understand? You are so frustrating, Doug Ford.

2:15: Doug wishes Councillor Vincent Crisanti (Ward 1, Etobicoke North) a happy 60th birthday, and adds that he looks 35, which is as much of an exaggeration as everything else on this show.

2:16: Now Doug introduces a guest, Councillor Mark Grimes (Ward 6, Etobicoke-Lakeshore), whom Doug and Rob call the ?Midnight Mayor.? Notably, he?s the first Toronto councillor to appear on the show since the crack scandal broke 67 days ago. They discuss how former Chicago Blackhawk and new Toronto Maple Leaf David Bolland will bring the Stanley Cup to Mimico in early August.

2:18: Irene, who solicited signatures for the Toronto Taxpayers Coalition petition to reduce the size of council, calls in. ?We knew all along city council would not approve cutting city council in half,? she says. ?The intention all along was to take it to the Ontario Municipal Board. We basically needed to meet the minimum requirements to do so.? As NOW?s Jonathan Goldsbie pointed out on Twitter, this could provide an argument for the City that the petition was submitted to council in bad faith, and is thus invalid. Oops.

2:24: Doug Ford goes on about how most city councillors don?t know what a day of hard work feels like, and mentions left-wing Councillor Gord Perks (Ward 14, Parkdale-High Park) specifically. He then remembers that Perks was once a miner, and takes back what he said. It?s true: Perks was once a coal miner in Kentucky.

2:40: Doug says Mark Grimes is as ?tight as skin on a grape? when it comes to his cheapness. ?He has deep pockets, but short arms,? Doug jokes with a caller. Grimes bought pizza for all of council on Friday.

3:00: And God bless Ford Nation!

And God bless you, Raccoon Nation! Without Rob, it was double the Doug, which can be tough to handle. We heard that Robyn Doolittle is a figurative journalistic assassin, and confirmed that Doug still doesn?t understand LRTs. So, the show met expectations. Three out of five pizzas.

Geraldo Rivera: Nude on Twitter!

So, Geraldo Rivera posted a nude selfie on Twitter.

Last night, the TV personality went on Twitter to post the above photo, writing "70 is the new 50 (Erica and family are going to be so pissed... but at my age...)."

That would be his wife, Erica Michelle Levy, whom he married in 2003 and with whom he has a daughter, Solita, 8. He has four other kids ages 19-34.

The three main takeaways from this story:

  1. Geraldo does look good for 70
  2. He really needs a new phone
  3. It's a slow news weekend

The highly-anticipated Moto X will be shown off on Aug. 1.

Motorola will show off the highly anticipated Moto X smartphone on Aug. 1 in New York City.

Motorola has teased that the new device will be "designed by you," and so expectations are that it will be highly user-customizable. (Users might have a choice of device color or configurations, although details are still to come.) Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside has previously confirmed that the device will be assembled in the U.S. and suggested that it will indeed ship this fall.

Rumors about the Moto X have been swirling ever since Google completed its acquisition of Motorola in May 2012 (though the device was dubbed the "X Phone" for a long time.)

"Our role in inventing the mobile phone is well known," Motorola said in a press release reconfirming that the Moto X will be assembled in the U.S., specifically in Texas. "We?re happy to be shaping its future as well."

Kansas City Replaces KCPD Ford Crown Vic

Kansas City sign of the time amid the decline of the American auto industry . . .

KCPD must choose a new police cruiser now that production of the Ford Crown Vic is ending.

And now . . .

PLEASE ADD YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO REPLACE THE KCPD'S FORD CROWN VIC WORKHORSE!!!

Remember, given that we now live in a global economy . . . Concerns about "American made" products are simplistic and wrongheaded given that most Hondas have more parts made in the United States than the average GMC model.

So . . . Help the KCPD choose their new gear soon to feared in rear view mirrors citywide.

WhatsApp expands its business model to iOS, will cost users 99 cents per year

WhatsApp expands its business model to iOS, will cost users 99 cents per year

Even though the WhatsApp iPhone application received an update yesterday, the popular messaging service made it official in a blog post today, detailing notes from the latest release. What's especially interesting here, however, is that WhatsApp is bringing a familiar cost scheme over to Apple's platform. Essentially, iOS users can download the app free of charge, but they will now have to pay a 99-cent yearly fee after the first twelve months of using it -- a business model similar to the one WhatsApp already implements on Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone. Hey, it's still but a small price to pay to somewhat fashionably keep tabs on all your amigos 24/7, eh?

Agenda Calendar Updates, Makes Managing Your Calendar Easier than Ever

iOS: Agenda Calendar, one of our favorite iPhone calendar apps, just unveiled a new version that boasts a new interface, minimal (but useful) calendar views, and new event editing options. Each of the new views is clean, but they all show you tons of useful information at a glance.

If you're looking for a calendar app that shows you a wealth of information in a single view without tons of colorful bars and blocks all over the screen, Agenda Calendar is for you. You can see how the new version works in the video above, but the layout is designed to offer both a one-handed "agenda" style view of your upcoming appointments with a quick fly-out view of event details that you can tap to see quickly. The new "split" view lets you see your full monthly calendar at the top with colored dots that indicate the density of appointments on any given day, and at the bottom you can see the specific appointments for any day you select in an endlessly scrolling list.

One of Agenda's previous drawbacks was that while it was great for checking your calendar and reviewing your appointments, adding new events wasn't its strong suit. The new version fixes many of those issues. Adding new appointments is easy, and you can either use the quick add tool to get something on your calendar in seconds, or expand it out to the full tool with custom recurrence options, alerts, durations, and attendees. Agenda can even send email or SMS to your attendees to remind them of your event, and seamlessly synchronizes with any other calendars on your device (iOS, Google Calendar, Exchange, etc) so you don't have to import or sync anything.

Finally, Agenda Calendar also integrates nicely with other apps on your phone. If you use Fantastical, for example?our favorite calendar app for iPhone?you can use its event creation engine to add events to Agenda as well. You can send to-dos and reminders to iOS Reminders, Clear, Due, Omnifocus, and more. Hit the link below to read more about the new version, and to give it a try. Agenda is also available for Android, although the latest features haven't made their way over yet.

Beijing rep assures, lectures Hong Kong lawmakers

BEIJING (AP) ? Beijing's top representative in Hong Kong met Tuesday with local lawmakers to ease tensions between the mainland and its special administrative region, though he warned against a planned protest and said Hong Kongers will never get to nominate their own leadership candidates without central government approval.

The working lunch marked the first meeting between the head of the central government's liaison office and the full membership of Hong Kong's Legislative Council since the former British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

Not all lawmakers attended, however, and Beijing's representative Zhang Xiaoming seemed to dampen the mood further by flatly ruling out the right of Hong Kong residents to nominate their own candidates in future elections for chief executive, Hong Kong's top local leader.

Lee Cheuk-yan Lee, a member of the council's pan-democratic camp, told reporters after the meeting that Zhang's out-and-out rejection calls into question Beijing's commitment to the substance of democracy, and not just its superficial appearance.

"So again, the talk on universal suffrage is actually suggesting that there is not going to be a genuine one," Lee said.

When China regained Hong Kong, it agreed to allow the special administrative region to keep its own political system and Western-style civil liberties such as freedom of speech until 2047. Beijing has pledged to let Hong Kongers pick their chief executive no earlier than 2017 and the entire legislature by 2020, but residents of the city are frustrated that there have been few signs of progress.

Anxiety that Hong Kong will be denied full democracy has grown in recent months after Beijing officials said the city's next leader must be acceptable to the central government.

Many residents fear the rights and freedoms they enjoy will be eaten away by mainland China's growing influence. Further complicating the relationship: City residents are increasingly irritated by a flood of mainland visitors to Hong Kong ? 35 million last year alone.

Tuesday's meeting came after tens of thousands of Hong Kongers took to the streets July 1 to demand promised democratic reforms, along with the resignation of their widely-disliked. Beijing-backed leader, Leung Chun-ying, who has been beset by one controversy after another since he took office a year ago.

Zhang said the central government is serious about eventually allowing all Hong Kongers to vote for the chief executive, who is now selected by a small, Beijing-controlled body. But he echoed Beijing's insistence that all candidates must be deemed acceptable by the mainland government.

He also criticized a proposal calling for at least 10,000 people to peacefully block roads in Hong Kong's central business district in July 2014 if the government fails to outline a plan for full democracy.

"No matter how nicely the initiator of the movement put his words, no matter how he packaged the idea or beautified it, illegal is illegal," Zhang said.

Pro-Beijing lawmakers were upbeat about the meeting, with one, Tam Yiu-chung, calling Zhang's remarks "very positive."

Political scientist Sonny Lo of the Hong Kong Institute of Education said the meeting was intended to demonstrate that Beijing is responding to concerns and to tamp down some of the outrage behind this month's massive pro-democracy rally.

Beijing wishes to "demonstrate to the pan-democrats and people of Hong Kong that the central government is heeding the voice of the public," Lo said.

Aquaman is the 'most toxic' superhero online

Internet

In this comic book image released by DC Comics, Aquaman is shown. Wonder Woman, Firestorm, Captain Atom and Aquaman are among the DC Comics characters...

AP

Aquaman, the superhero most of us either mock or just plain forget about, is actually pretty darn important ... to Internet supervillains. Search results for Aquaman-related topics lead to a great number of risky websites.

"[S]earching for the latest 'Aquaman and free torrent download,' 'Aquaman and watch,' 'Aquaman and online,' and 'Aquaman and free trailer' yields a 18.6 percent chance of landing on a website that has tested positive for online threats, such as spyware, adware, spam, phishing, viruses and other malware," Robert Siciliano, an online security evangelist, writes on the official blog of security software maker McAfee.

This overall risk percentage was calculated using McAfee SiteAdvisor site rankings. Aquaman is closely followed by Mr. Fantastic (18.22 percent chance of online threats), the Hulk (17.30 percent chance of online threats), and Wonder Woman (16.77 percent chance of line threats).

Here's how the full list breaks down:

  1. Aquaman???????????????? 18.60%
  2. Mr. Fantastic ???????? 18.22%
  3. The Hulk????????????????? 17.30%
  4. Wonder Woman ??? 16.77%
  5. Daredevil ??????????????? 16.70%
  6. Iron Man ???????????????? 15.63%
  7. Superman 15.21%
  8. Thor ???????????????????????? 15.10%
  9. Green Lantern ??????? 15.00%
  10. Cyclops???????????????????? 14.40%
  11. Wolverine???????????????? 14.27%
  12. Invisible Woman??? 12.40%
  13. Batman???????????????????? 12.30%
  14. Captain America 11.77%
  15. Spider-Man?????????????? 11.15%

Siciliano offers some basic tips to help keep you safe as you search for your favorite superheroes online. He suggests that you should stay suspicious, be wary of offers that seem to good to be true, double-check URLs, and to use security software. (Well, the fella writes for McAfee's blog. He couldn't possibly miss an opportunity to suggest security software.) It all really boils down to: Use common sense. Searching for sexy images of Catwoman could very well leave you exposed.

Procurador de Texas lanza campa?a a gobernaci?n

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, EE.UU. (AP) ?

Sony's 'SmartWatch2' As A Pioneer In Wearable Technology at Wearable Computing Conference 2013

Building off of the momentum of past conferences, Golden Networking will bring Wearable Computing Conference 2013 (http://www.wearable-computing-conference.com), "Revolutionizing the Human Experience Through Next-Generation Technology", to New York on September 25.

New York, NY (OPENPRESS) Sony had launched SmartWatch2 at the end of June and became the precursor in the market of wearable technology. "Sony is the proud leader in the smartwatch market since introducing our first Bluetooth watch in 2007," said Stefan K. Persson, head of Companion products at Sony Mobile Communications. Furthermore, the new edition is the world's first water-resistant smartwatch with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. In the meantime, Sony has created more than 200 million apps dedicated for SmartWatch2.

Many smartphone users rely on their phones to get and search information, to check their agenda, and to view social media and play games. SmartWatch breaks though this fixed mode. Now, users can have easy access to all of these functions on their wrist.

"The future of wearable devices is incredibly bright with analyst research predicting 41 million 'smart' watches will be sold by 2016," Persson noted. However, Android-only accessory will limit its utility, especially in America. Sony should consider other options, such as cooperating with Apple for the next step. On the other hand, as Apple is actively creating its own smartwatch-iWatch, the cooperation between Sony and Apple will not be easy. Every electronic giant wants to be the first and the best in future wearable technology market.

The technology of the future is here, with the production of a new generation of technologies that will allow users to interact with computing devices that are worn by the bearer under, with or on top of clothing. Protestants attack Belfast cops over blocked march

BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) ? Protestant hardliners attacked lines of Belfast riot police Friday as Northern Ireland's annual mass marches by the Orange Order brotherhood reached a furious, chaotic end with running street battles at several conflict zones.

In north Belfast, police in flame-retardant suits and helmets deployed a half-dozen armored cars to block a road so that Protestant Orangemen could not march past the edge of Ardoyne, a militant Catholic district that has become the most bitterly contested spot on the city map.

Men jumped on top of the armored barricade and, as hundreds of marchers and supporters formed a sea of often alcohol-fueled fury behind them, wielded pipes, golf clubs, wood planks and even ceremonial swords to vandalize the police vans.

Emboldened, some threw bottles and bricks point-blank into police lines. Many in the mob cheered as one policeman, struck and knocked semiconscious, was dragged to safety by colleagues.

Officers responded by firing a massive mobile water cannon at the rioters, propelling at least one shirtless man sideways off the roof of an armored car and on to the pavement, his forehead split open.

But the Protestant crowd kept swelling and hurling objects into police lines, forcing officers to respond with volleys of snub-nosed plastic bullets in a failed bid to force the crowd to disperse or retreat.

During melees that lasted for hours, police said at least 23 officers and several rioters were injured, as was the Protestant politician who represents north Belfast in British Parliament, Nigel Dodds.

Dodds was struck in the head with a brick and knocked unconscious while talking to Orangemen standing near the police barricade. His Democratic Unionist Party, the largest in Northern Ireland, later said he had regained consciousness in Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital.

Leaders of the Orange Order vowed to keep Protestants rallying to the confrontation zone until police caved in and permitted the march past Ardoyne.

The police commander, Chief Constable Matt Baggott, said his force would stand its ground and gather video evidence against the many hundreds of rioters.

Police were enforcing a surprise decision by a British-appointed Parades Commission to bar the Orangemen from using the main road beside Ardoyne to return Friday night to their nearby lodge, the first time such an order had been given.

The cross-community commission said it wanted Orangemen to stay away from that 300-yard stretch of road because, for the previous four years, Irish Republican Army splinter groups based in Ardoyne had attacked police with gunfire, grenades, firebombs and other weapons and wounded more than 250 officers in clashes that always followed the Orangemen's passage.

Orangemen accused the commission of surrendering to IRA violence and warned that both sides could play that game.

More than 4,000 Northern Irish officers and 630 reinforcements imported from Britain were deployed to keep control of the streets for this year's "Twelfth," Northern Ireland's official sectarian holiday, when the British Protestant majority commemorates a 17th-century military victory over their Irish Catholic foes.

In a sign that police expect Protestants to riot all weekend, police installed portable toilets and stacked pallets of bottled water for officers manning the armored-car barricades near Ardoyne. Commanders requested several hundred more police reinforcements from Britain due to arrive Saturday.

Police also faced angry crowds around Short Strand, the only Catholic enclave in otherwise Protestant east Belfast. There, rival crowds of youths traded salvos of bottles, bricks, golf balls, bolts and ball bearings over high security fences called "peace lines." Police suffered barrages of firebombs from the Protestant side and responded with more water-cannon blasts.

Police advised motorists to avoid much of north and east Belfast to avoid becoming trapped in the mob violence.

Before the rioting began, Orange leaders marched to the Parades Commission headquarters and unfurled a banner that read, "We will not be defeated. No surrender."

Orange leaders laid blame in advance for any bloodshed on the Parades Commission, which since 1997 has imposed restrictions on Orange marches to minimize conflict with Catholic communities.

Arguments over Friday's violence threatened to create a rift in Northern Ireland's unity government, a 6-year-old coalition of political extremes that has governed Northern Ireland with surprising stability in fulfillment of the territory's 1998 peace accord.

First Minister Peter Robinson, a Protestant who leads the Democratic Unionist Party, blamed Short Strand's Catholics for starting the rioting in east Belfast and the Parades Commission for creating an explosive situation in Ardoyne.

Robinson said Protestants felt "justifiable anger and frustration at the Parades Commission, who bear much responsibility for the situation in Belfast as do those who attacked parades as they passed certain locations." But he said Protestants' attacks on police and Catholics "can never be justified and must stop."

His major Catholic partners in government, the Irish nationalist Sinn Fein party, accused Robinson of blaming everyone but those most responsible: Orange Order leaders.

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said Orange chiefs whipped Protestants into a frenzy and called their leadership "a disgrace."

His Sinn Fein colleague, Alex Maskey, called Robinson's response to the violence "disappointing and a failure in leadership."

Robinson is seeking an emergency recall of the Northern Ireland Assembly next week to debate the reasons for barring the Orangemen from Ardoyne and the causes of Friday's disorder.

"The Twelfth" commemorates the July 12, 1690, triumph of Protestant King William of Orange against the Catholic he dethroned, James II, in the Battle of the Boyne south of Belfast.

The Orange Order, founded in 1795 as a force for uniting often-feuding Protestant denominations under one anti-Catholic banner, was instrumental in creating Northern Ireland in 1921 shortly before the predominantly Catholic rest of Ireland won independence from Britain.

Catholic clashes with police over Protestant marches triggered the rise of Northern Ireland's modern conflict in 1969. The issue has defied resolution despite a two-decade peace process that has delivered paramilitary cease-fires, British military withdrawals, police reform and a power-sharing government.

Friday's approximately 550 Orange parades attracted unusually heavy crowds of spectators, who brought lawn chairs to the roadsides and basked in exceptional sunshine on what was the hottest, muggiest day of the year.

Among the Belfast spectators, many bedecked in Union Jack-patterned hats and sunglasses, was a sleeping infant bearing a bib that read, "My 1st Twelfth."

Luxury home sales are down in Canada - Business Blog ... - Maclean's

Here at Maclean's, we appreciate the written word. And we appreciate you, the reader. Bad news if you?re in the market to sell off some high-end real estate. It?s officially now a buyer?s market for luxury homes in Canada, according the latest update released today on sales of million-dollar homes from Southeby?s International Realty.

Overall sales of luxury detached homes were flat or down significantly in most of the major markets in the first half of 2013 compared to the same time last year. Sales of high-end homes were down about nine per cent in Vancouver and about six per cent in Toronto. They were flat in Montreal. Only Calgary saw a significant uptick (15 per cent) in sales of homes over $1 million:

The number of days high-end homes sat on the market before finally selling also crept up in most cities. It was most dramatic in Vancouver, where the listing time before a sale rose 57 per cent. It jumped 37 per cent in Montreal, where it now takes on average more than four months to sell a million-dollar home and close to six months to sell a high-end condo.

Listing times crept up slightly in Toronto and fell in Calgary. (Note: The Southeby?s report doesn?t contain this data for Toronto. The calculations here are taken from the Toronto Real Estate Board?s monthly reports and compare year-to-date sales in June 2013 to June 2012. We calculated an average based on sales of detached homes in neighbourhoods of the city where the average selling price was over $1 million):

Prices are also softening for high-end homes, with fewer homes selling for over asking price. That?s a reflection of fewer buyers in the market for seven-figure homes. Even in Calgary, where the luxury home market seems to be heating up, buyers are still able to drive a hard bargain:

The full report is here in PDF.

Pebble says a million apps have been downloaded, updates status of outstanding Kickstarter orders

Pebble one million apps downloaded so far, all Kickstarter orders to be shipped by weeks end

To say that Pebble's Kickstarter-launched smartwatch has been more popular than it expected would be a slight understatement. In fact, the company touched base with us today to let us know exactly how much demand there's been for the wearable, how it's going to fulfill that demand and what it's doing to help developers. For a small startup, Pebble's taken a huge amount of orders for its $150 device. Along with the initial 85,000 Kickstarter pledges, the company told us today that it's had over 190,000 pre-orders to date. On top of that, over a million Pebble "watchapps" have been downloaded from Pebble and its developers. Naturally, all that success has created some issues -- to see what the company's planning on doing about it, head after the break.

Firefox OS hands-on: Alcatel OneTouch Fire and ZTE Open (video)

Firefox OS hands-on: Alcatel OneTouch Fire and ZTE Open

We've crossed paths with Firefox OS before, but today marks the first time we've played with handsets running the final build of Mozilla's mobile software. The Alcatel OneTouch Fire and ZTE Open you see above are the same hardware we saw at MWC earlier this year -- in fact, the latter just launched in Spain on Telefónica for €69 ($90) contract-free including €30 ($39) of airtime for prepaid customers. We took both phones for a brief spin and immediately noticed a slight improvement in performance. Unfortunately, there's still a significant amount of lag in the UI, especially when scrolling through web pages and navigating the app tray. Websites also take a while to load, even when connecting over Wi-Fi. Then again, what do you expect for €69? Check out the gallery below and hit the break to watch our hands-on video.

Note: the ZTE Open we handled was destined for Movistar (a Telefónica brand) and is launching today for €69 (not €63 as mentioned in our video).

Gay Marriages Cleared in California

WASHINGTON?Gay-marriage opponents lost a bid Sunday to temporarily reinstate California's Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage, when a Supreme Court justice denied their motion.

Same-sex marriages resumed in the state Friday shortly after the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco said a 2010 federal district court order finding a constitutional right to same-sex marriage should take effect immediately. That followed the Supreme Court's Wednesday ruling that federal appeals courts lacked jurisdiction to review the 2010 district court order.

Kris Perry, right, and Sandy Stier, who sued against Proposition 8 and were married Saturday, ride in San Francisco's gay-pride parade Sunday.

Proposition 8 backers petitioned Justice Anthony Kennedy, who oversees the Ninth Circuit, arguing that the appeals court should have waited 25 days?the time generally required before high court rulings become final. On Sunday, Justice Kennedy denied the petition without comment, a court spokesman said.

Legal Patchwork

See where each state stands on the same-sex marriage issue.

The Supreme Court's ruling turned on whether Proposition 8 supporters had standing to defend the law in federal court. Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, said only California could appeal a decision invalidating one of its laws, and it had declined to do so. Justice Kennedy dissented. Neither side discussed the merits of the law.

The Supreme Court's ruling effectively reinstated the district court decision, which the Ninth Circuit had stayed during the appeals process.

Same-sex weddings, which had begun under a California Supreme Court ruling until ended by the November 2008 Proposition 8 vote, resumed Friday almost immediately after the Ninth Circuit lifted its stay of the district-court ruling.

California Attorney General Kamala Harris officiated at the first such ceremony. The couple heading the suit that invalidated Proposition 8, Kristin Perry and Sandra Stier, was married at San Francisco City Hall.

Same-sex marriages were to resume Monday in other California counties, including Los Angeles and Orange counties, officials said.

Under Supreme Court rules, Proposition 8 backers may ask another justice to reinstate the order blocking same-sex marriages, and any justice who receives such an application may also refer it to the full court for action.
