Out of the Darkness Walk :: Suicide Prevention :: Washington, D.C. :: Sat., Sept. 29th

In Memory of Ian Daughtrey

(WASHINGTON, D.C. - September 21, 2012) - I am reaching out to you for moral support and? your involvement in a national cause, on Saturday, September 29th;? for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) - Out of the Darkness Walk on the Washington Mall- Sylvan Theatre from (6:00 pm- 8:00 pm).

In honor of Ian Daughtrey,? I am Team Captain for TEAM SAFECAMP,? a charitable donation can be made under SAFECAMP-THE HOBOs? at the following website: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) - Out of the Darkness Walk- www.outofthedarkness.org

Suicide is stigma in our society and at times it is a very sensitive discussion. However, the community needs to address and educate on all signs such as -depression, bullying, and low self-esteem, etc in order to save individuals lives. Let?s come together for a cause to help others and make a stand.

My personal experience with suicide happen on May 27, 2012, my son, Ian Alexander Daughtrey (18) a graduating TC Williams High School Senior took his life. There was an overflow of love and support from the student body and community to honor him with a candlelight vigil. That evening the students shared with me in confidence how he impacted their lives and save them during their darkness times. Ian taught his friends and peers how to a form unity without discrimination of race, religion, sexuality or culture. Yet, his compassion for his peers and classmate could not help him with depression.

In this time of uncertainty, the last three (3) months, reflecting on my son?s life, he gave so much of himself to everyone and yet he asks for so little in return. Not only did he impact his friends and peers but the community.? I have continued to talk with his friends and peers, I cannot perceive this as one individual for the cause, I have reached out to several amazing community leaders to strategize on various community outreach awareness programs in order to seize the stigma of suicide.??

Suicide Statistics
??Every 14.2 minutes someone in the United States dies by suicide.
??Nearly 1,000,000 people make a suicide attempt every year.
??Suicide rates are highest for people between the ages of 40 and 59
??It is the third leading cause of death among African American males between the ages 15 and 24
??Caucasians are two times as likely to commit suicide as are African Americans and Hispanics.
??Most suicide are due to socioeconomics, bullying, disharmony with family, unhealthy relationship, academic performance, etc.
??Men are nearly 4 times more likely to die by suicide than women. Women attempt suicide 3 times as often as men.
??Suicide and depression is considered a ?stigma? and a family secret. The denial makes it difficult for families to heal when they have lost someone to suicide.
??154 Military soldiers committed suicide last year in Afghanistan
??In 2005, 76 MLB players committed suicides
??90% of people who die by suicide have a diagnosable and treatable psychiatric disorder at the time of their death.
??Most people with mental illness do not die by suicide.
??Recent data puts yearly medical costs for suicide at nearly $100 million (2005).

I hope that I can count on your involvement and increase awareness in your community. I look forward to hearing from you on this critical issue. Thank you for your time and consideration.
?Best Regards,

The movie subsequently went on to become one of the biggest hits in Tamil cinema during 2004, introducing Asin to Tamil film industry. Her role was that of a vivacious young model named Kalpana. The following Diwali in 2005, Asin had two releases, Sivakasi and Majaa. Despite the latter becoming an average grosser, the former went on to be a successful venture at the box office. Bourne, Assange & the politics of conspiracy | Overland literary journal

Watching The Bourne Legacy, I was struck by how it was the cinematic equivalent of WikiLeaks in more than just the glib sense that some of Julian Assange?s right-wing critics and supporters have suggested.

The film both overlaps with and extends the narrative set up by its three predecessors and, like them, is about how elite networks at the highest levels of US military-intelligence try to re-establish order after the damaging blows dealt to their super-agent program, Treadstone, by Jason Bourne (Matt Damon). Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner) is the product of a sister program, Operation Outcome, which retired Air Force Colonel Eric Byer (Edward Norton) is called in to shut down before more black ops secrets leak out, and further imperil state authority.

The first film in the series, The Bourne Identity, focused on Bourne?s struggle for personal liberation from sinister bureaucratic elites, but with each new instalment, the complexity of the conspiracy and its origins in the very heart of the state have come increasingly to the fore. The portrayal of how the elite rules looks strikingly like?the picture Assange has painted of the ?cognitive conspiracies? that he seeks to challenge through WikiLeaks. That is, informational and interpersonal connections that gives those ?in? on the network greater power than the sum of their individual influence. Bourne and Cross disrupt those connections, thereby weakening the conspiracy.

As the core conspirators are forced to involve allies less closely knitted to them, their web increasingly frays. Despite the numerous chase scenes and explosions, what the conspirators fear most is that the truth will get out, just as WikiLeaks seeks to expose secrets as the key to breaking down the rule of the powerful.

The Bourne films are radical in that they portray our rulers as irredeemably self-interested, anti-democratic and callously violent. They are shown as operating at the head of a system that is stacked against ordinary people. Yet at the same time the movies arrive at profoundly limited and pessimistic conclusions regarding what can be done about this stacking. Either the conspirators manage to get their way (the character played by Joan Allen in the earlier films, a state functionary who turns against her bosses, is shown being effortlessly victimised and silenced in this one), or we must look to a lone, almost superhuman hero to shift the balance of forces. Or a mixture of both.

We?ve been here before. Hollywood tends to incorporate anti-systemic critiques within its idioms in terms of conspiracies. This happened during the last great wave of questioning of the US state in the 1960s and 70s. Back then Hollywood produced?a series of paranoia movies that portrayed US politics and society run by shadowy cliques, and which mostly ended pessimistically with the powerful restoring their ability to control and manipulate. Even the most hopeful of these, Alan J Pakula?s depiction of the Watergate scandal All The President?s Men, still relies on uniquely placed, heroic individuals (Washington Post journalists, ?Deep Throat?, etc) to expose the conspiracy. The darkest is probably Pakula?s masterpiece The Parallax View, in which ? despite the action being staged to occur in full public view, right out in the open ? the conspirators can simply restore stability by imposing a narrative that suits their interests on the masses.

Of course, modern capitalism necessarily involves the ruling class engaging in secretive, conspiratorial behaviours in order to maintain its rule. Both WikiLeaks and Hollywood paranoia thrillers stress this aspect of domination over that of the existence of capitalist social relations, of a system of class exploitation driven by competitive accumulation. In doing this they fall back on an essentially liberal worldview. Assange has made clear?he is no revolutionary who wants to see an end to capitalism but, rather, someone who wants to see more open and accountable governance.?Slavoj ?i?ek?has argued that no matter how ruthless this kind of anti-capitalist critique is, the ?goal, explicit or implied, is to regulate capitalism ? through the pressure of the media, parliamentary inquiries, harsher laws, honest police investigations ? but never to question the liberal-democratic institutional mechanisms of the bourgeois state of law.?

The ugly aspect of this worldview is its tendency to reduce everyone?s actions to being pawns in a sinister power game. At its most appalling there has been the accusation?by some WikiLeaks supporters that the two Swedish women who allege Assange sexually assaulted them must have fabricated the claims to help the US extradite him. But more generally, this attitude both overestimates the coherence of the ruling class and underestimates the possibility of conscious collective action from below.

Perhaps there is one ?conspiracy? we can learn from: Babeuf?s ?conspiracy of equals?, which (however prematurely) sought to radicalise the French Revolution to create ?a society based on economic equality and common ownership of property?. Far from a tiny privileged group, Babeuf?s conspiracy was focused on mass agitation. As the state prosecutor in Babeuf?s trial complained:

Their means were the publication and distribution of anarchistic newspapers, writings and pamphlets ? the formation of a multitude of little clubs run by their agents; it was the establishment of organisers and flyposters; it was the corrupting of workshops; it was the infernal art of sowing false rumours and spreading false news, of stirring up the people by blaming the government for all the ills resulting from current circumstances.

This more closely resembles the building that Antonio Gramsci called an ?expansive? hegemonic project, one capable of deepening the cognitive and interpersonal connections between different exploited and oppressed groups in order to not just challenge the state but replace it with an entirely different (and deeply democratic) form of societal organisation. It means relying on the mass of ordinary people and not a select, heroic minority to be the producers of such a society.

Space Elevator Enthusiasts Push On despite Lengthy Time Frames and Long Odds

A space-travel technology, simple in concept, has been frustratingly difficult to realize

Space elevatorA LONG CLIMB: An artist's conception shows a climber pod ascending a space elevator's tether to deploy a satellite. Image: ISEC

SEATTLE??I think building an elevator to space is maybe the best thing I could do in the world,? Michael Laine says.

His company, Liftport, has just raised over $62,000 on Kickstarter to build robot climbers on a skyward cable?an early step toward his eventual goal of putting a space elevator on the moon. A space elevator is just what it sounds like?a capsule that travels to and from space along a track or tether to provide reliable access to orbit.

Behind Laine is the cavernous Great Gallery at Seattle's Museum of Flight, where dozens of aircraft are on display, chronicling the human adventure of flight. Meeting in a nearby conference room are about 40 space enthusiasts, in town for the annual Space Elevator Conference hosted by ISEC, the International Space Elevator Consortium. Some of them have sacrificed their careers, credit ratings or savings accounts?all in pursuit of a simple concept that has thus far proved impossible in practice.

None of the conference participants could be accused of thinking small, whether the discussion is about a 100,000-kilometer tether made of carbon nanotubes, space-based solar power, or man's ultimate destiny to seed the galaxy.

Peter Swan, retired from over 40 years building space systems and now serving as ISEC's vice president, calls a space elevator a way to ?make the human condition better.? His altruism was shared by many of the conference attendees.

But it's not all starry-eyed optimism. ?I'm trying to tackle a project that a lot of people think is science fiction,? says Laine, who has gone into foreclosure seven times over nearly a decade to keep his company, and his dream, alive. ?It's appropriate to be skeptical, even at this stage.?

UNOBTAINIUM
The idea of a space elevator has set the heart of many engineers aflutter. But all eventually run into the same obstacle?the so-called unobtainium problem, or the need for a material that does not exist.

A space elevator is a theoretical structure that reaches from the Earth's surface into space, balanced by its own mass and the outward centrifugal force from the spinning Earth. The physics is sweet?complicated enough to be interesting, simple enough to seem doable, and the space elevator?s intrigue has grown exponentially since Arthur C. Clarke gave it a fictional treatment in his 1979 novel The Fountains of Paradise.

The problem is the construction material, which must be superstrong yet very light. Equations worked out decades ago by Russian engineer Yuri Artsutanov and, independently, by American space scientist Jerome Pearson, found that the ideal tether should be tapered, widest at the geosynchronous orbit altitude of 35,800 kilometers, and narrowest at Earth's surface and at its far end. The tether should extend far past geosynchronous orbit, where a counterweight would help provide the needed tension.

The rub is that the tether must have sufficient tensile strength to hold up its own large mass. Any material works in principle, but even for stainless steel the tether would need to be 1043 times wider at geosynchronous orbit than at the ground.

The only known material that offers the required strength-to-density ratio is a carbon nanotube, a cylindrical chickenwire lattice of carbon atoms. The problem is that nanotubes exist in a form akin to a pile of soot, and no one knows how to fashion them into an extended rope, braid, cable or ribbon. In the view of elevator enthusiasts, carbon nanotubes, or CNTs are the last major ?if only.?

Become A Former Smoker With These Tips For Quitting ?

This article will help you learn some of the tips and tricks to help you quit smoking successfully.

If an activity becomes difficult and makes you crave a cigarette, try to step away from it. There are some activities that might just naturally make you crave a cigarette. These might include drinking a cup of coffee or hanging out in a bar with friends. If you?re not strong enough to handles these activities without a cigarette, realize it and just walk away.

Make a list of healthy things you can do to relieve stress, anxiety or frustration. For many people, smoking is a way to relieve stress. Your list can help you find a better, healthier way of coping with negative feelings so that you won?t be as tempted to smoke when you?re having a bad day.

If you want to quit smoking, don?t do it. Quitting smoking are two words that imply losing something, making it a grieving process. Instead, psychologically embrace tobacco freedom. Don?t think about how you would make anyone else happy, but what would make you happy if you were free from cigarettes. What could you do with that money and time?

Find ways to keep your body and mind busy when you quit smoking. Take up walking as this will also help you get in better shape. Another great idea to keep your hands busy is to find a hobby. Learn to sew, knit or learn woodworking. You won?t have time to think about cigarettes when you stay busy.

Carry water with you to drink whenever you are craving a cigarette. The water will help to occupy you and is an excellent replacement for nicotine. It can become a healthy habit, far better than addiction to cigarettes. Add a twist of lemon or lime if you want some extra flavor.

Choose the date that you will quit and write it on the calendar. After you?ve done this, tell your friends and family. Choosing your quit date makes your goal more specific and real so that you?re more likely to take action towards it. It?s harder to change your mind once you?ve made a commitment, and other people can help support you if they know about your quit date.

If you wish to quit smoking cold turkey, get rid of all of the things in your house that remind you of smoking. This means, no more ash trays or cigarette lighters. If you hold onto this stuff, you?ll only be reminded of smoking and it might make you want to have a cigarette.

If you have tried to quit cold turkey before without much success, consider the tapering off method. With this style of smoking cessation, you gradually cut back on how many cigarettes you have a day in the weeks leading up to your quit date. By the time you reach your quit date, your body should be ready to let go of that final cigarette.

Start exercising! If you are active it can help to reduce symptoms of withdrawal and nicotine cravings. Rather than reaching for a cigarette, get off the couch and exercise, or go for a walk. This will really help to take off your mind of smoking, and is also a great way to improve your physical fitness.

Commit yourself totally to your decision to quit smoking. If you are determined to quit smoking then put your whole soul into the effort. Announce to family and close friends that you are quitting and need support. Write down your specific goals and make them as detailed as you can. Also write down your individual reasons for quitting. Post both lists where you can easily see them ? like the bathroom mirror. Join a support group and attend meetings, whether online or in person. Go all in and make this happen.

Use visualization in order to assist you in quitting your smoking habit. When doing deep breathing exercises, shut your eyes, and imagine yourself being a non-smoker. Imagine yourself not giving in to temptation. Imagine winning a medal for not smoking. These types of programs, referred to as ?quit smoking hypnosis,? are extremely effective.

Abstain from alcohol when you first quit smoking. Many people associate smoking and drinking, so the temptation to smoke will be higher if you drink. If you don?t want to stop drinking altogether, limit yourself to drinking in restaurants or bars so that you?ll have to go outside if you want to smoke. You might decide it?s not worth the effort if you have to leave the table to smoke.

In order to quit this damaging addiction, you need a combination of determination, focus, and a strong plan. Use what you have learned in this article to help you overcome your cravings. While you go through the process, stay motivated by thinking of all of the benefits that will be yours once you have kicked the habit!
