Conflicting reports about health of Egypt ex-president Mubarak

CAIRO (Reuters) - Ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak was moved from prison to a military hospital on Tuesday after a health crisis, officials said.

Senior officers and military sources gave various accounts of the 84-year-old Mubarak's condition, including that he was in a coma and on life support. But they said he was not "clinically dead," as briefly reported by the state news agency.

The move came amid high tension over the election of a new, civilian president. Mubarak's long-time Islamist adversaries in the Muslim Brotherhood say their candidate won the weekend run-off against a former general. But the result is still unknown.

Sentenced on June 2 to life imprisonment for his role in the killings of demonstrators who helped overthrow him during last year's Arab Spring revolution, Mubarak has been portrayed as being in poor health by officials for the past year. He was wheeled in to court during his trial on a hospital stretcher.

Many Egyptians have been skeptical. Some protested when he was not sentenced to death. Many others suspect fellow officers, who pushed him aside after 30 years to appease the protesters, of conniving to give him a more comfortable confinement.

Mubarak's legal team has been pressing to have him moved from the prison hospital to a better-equipped facility, saying he was not receiving adequate treatment for his condition. However, prison authorities previously refused to let him go.

There has been no clear statement from independent medical experts on what ails him, though state media have reported a variety of illnesses from shortage of breath toheart attacks.

On Tuesday evening, two security sources told Reuters he had suffered a heart attack and stroke and was in a coma. They said he was finally to be moved to Cairo's Maadi military hospital - a smart complex by the Nile, where the last shah of Iran died.

Shortly afterward, the state news agency, in a report echoed by a hospital source at Maadi, said Mubarak was "clinically dead" - a condition normally defined by the lack of heartbeat and breathing, and one from which patients can be revived.

However, General Said Abbas, a member of the ruling military council, later told Reuters that, while Mubarak had suffereda stroke, "any talk of him being clinically dead is nonsense."

Another military source said he was on life support: "He is completely unconscious. He is using artificial respiration."

A third military source described the former leader as "almost stable," without elaborating.

General Mamdouh Shaheen, of the military council, toldCNN: "His health is deteriorating and he is in critical condition."

Private television al-Hayat broadcast video which it said was of Mubarak's move. The images showed a patient on a stretcher being transferred from an ambulance into hospital.

Al-Arabiya television said Mubarak's wife Suzanne had arrived at Maadi hospital.

Cartoon Network's iPhone and iPad app adds a live TV feed, for authenticated customers

Cartoon Network announced plans to join the TV Everywhere party with a live internet feed of its channel (for authenticated cable / satellite customers) during upfronts and now the updated v1.8 app has arrived on iPhones and iPads. The feed can also be streamed with Flash on the channel's website (we tried it on an Android 2.3 device and logged in but couldn't get it to play), although the only differences we noticed were that the website feed was slightly ahead of our cable box and iOS was a few seconds behind, but with slightly higher picture quality. All in all it's very similar to the WatchESPN experience (which ABC expanded upon last week with Watch Disney, Watch Disney Jr and Watch DisneyXD apps, though the full experience is only currently available to Comcast customers), and should satisfy all those who have been missing the Toonami experience when they're away from home. Take a peek after the break for a preview trailer, shot of the login screen and press release.

Egypt faces new dawn under Muslim Brotherhood

EPA/MOHAMED MESSARA

Supporters of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohammed Morsi celebrate in Cairo's Tahrir Square after the Brotherhood claimed victory in the presidential election on Monday.

By Richard Engel , NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent

Analysis

?CAIRO, Egypt ? It could be the end of Egypt as we know it. Early, still unofficial, but credible results, show that the Muslim Brotherhood has won Egypt?s presidency.?

However the military has made a series of decrees that threaten to usurp the new president?s power ? setting the stage for a major showdown between the remnants of the old regime who make up the ruling military council and supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood.?

Still, the biggest country in the Arab world is poised to start its first experiment in Islamic democracy.

Many Egyptians are celebrating ? after all, a majority of voters elected the Muslim Brotherhood?s firebrand candidate Mohammed Morsi. ?

Other Egyptians are calling this a ?black day? that will set back Egypt a hundred years.

Oh, that?s an exaggeration some Egyptians and Middle East analysts argue. ??

The Brotherhood will have to be answerable to future voters, they say.?

Democracy will keep the group in check, they say.?

The Brotherhood will be forced to adopt a center of the road policy, they say.

The Brotherhood is really quite moderate, they say.

Egypt will end up like Turkey, with an Islamist government, but secular laws, they say.

If Egyptians don?t like the Brotherhood, protesters can just go back to Cairo?s Tahrir Square and get rid of it, they say.

I wouldn?t count on it.

A power struggle is underway between the Egyptian military and the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood, which says its candidate, Mohammed Morsi, won the country's first free presidential election. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Democracy if undemocratic group comes to power?

The Muslim Brotherhood is a fundamentalist group. It is anti-American at its core, despite recently sending delegations to the United States to win friends. The Brotherhood is vehemently anti-Israel.?The group is also largely anti-democratic. The Brotherhood was happy to use elections to gain power, but it believes wholeheartedly in Islamic law, the immutable rulings from God that are not subject to ballot boxes or opinion polls.?

Military guards Egypt power as Islamists claim victory

If democracy brings an undemocratic group to power, is that a victory for democracy?

The Brotherhood has a few basic tenets which will likely be at the core of future policy, basic truths that shape its worldview.?

They include:

  • America is at war with Islam.
  • Women are lustful creatures who need to be veiled and controlled.?
  • Israel is a temporary abomination that needs to be ? and one day will be ? excised from the world.
  • Hamas, the Palestinian resistance group that the U.S. considers a terrorist group, is fighting a heroic struggle.
  • Islamic law is fair to all minorities, including Christians since it proscribes tolerance and protection for people of ?the book.?? (Christians, by the way, don?t think they need to be ?tolerated? or ?protected? which they believe implies they are second class citizens who need to be accepted and defended like village idiots).
  • Secrecy is tantamount.?
  • Victory comes through patience.?

On the positive side, the Brotherhood is basically a working man?s group that supports Egypt?s legions of poor, often ignored by former President Hosni Mubarak.?If Mubarak's former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafik had won the election, Egypt would very likely have turned violent, with an unpredictable outcome.

I also wouldn?t count on Egypt ending up like Turkey.?In Istanbul, women often dress provocatively and there are bars on nearly every corner.?The country is economically booming. The Muslim Brotherhood is much more hard-line than Turkish Islamists.?

Mohammed Morsi and his supporters celebrate his apparent victory in the Egyptian presidential election at his campaign headquarters in Cairo, Egypt on Monday.

Brotherhood vs. military showdown
The Egyptian military is terrified of the Brotherhood. Morsi has repeatedly said he will purge all parts of Egyptian society of ?remnants? of the former regime.

The military worries that once Morsi is sworn in, he will try to imprison or at least sideline senior military officers. Sunday night, as votes were being counted showing Morsi in the lead, the military launched a controversial preemptive strike.

In a decree that is very likely illegal, the military declared that the new president does not have the authority to declare war or remove military officers.?The military declared its autonomy and immunity in a blatant attempt to castrate the new president before he takes office. ?

The power struggle between Morsi and the military that is now under way will likely take months to sort out.?Morsi and the military will battle over the parliament, the constitution and Sunday night?s decree.?

While it?s too early to know who will win this showdown, it seems unlikely that the military can hang on to its self-appointed authorities ? as every Egyptian knows the kinds of powers a president should and should not have.?

A new dawn
It?s a new dawn for Egypt. ?If the military truly feels threatened, it might stage a real coup, sending tanks into the streets, instead of what many Egyptians have called its attempted ?soft coup,? through decrees and court decisions in recent weeks.?

The Muslim Brotherhood talks about understanding and moderation. After declaring victory last night, Musri said he will be inclusive. Morsi wants to reassure Egyptians and Egypt?s allies that the country will remain stable.? If pushed, however, the Muslim Brotherhood?s true colors will show.?

Good luck, Egypt! Critical choices and potential major changes lie ahead.

Already Monday, Shafik?s campaign started contesting the early, unofficial results, as Egypt hangs in the balance.?

Calif man rescued after whale hits boat off Mexico

(AP) ? A Northern California man was rescued after his 50-foot boat was struck by a whale while he sailed alone about 40 miles off the western coast of Mexico, authorities said.

The impact from the collision knocked out the sailboat's steering and the vessel began taking on water late Tuesday, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Pamela Boehland said.

Max Young of Sacramento stuffed a mattress into the hole caused by the whale, turned on four bilge pumps and was "trying to bail out water as fast as he could, because he didn't know how long it would take to be rescued," his wife, Debra Young, told The Associated Press.

He also activated an emergency beacon, which alerted the Coast Guard.

"His EPIRB delivered an exact position to us, contact information that allowed us to quickly discern the sail plan of and number of persons on the vessel, and really took a lot of the search out of the search and rescue," said Lt. Charles Kelly, of the Coast Guard's command center in Alameda, Calif.

With that information, officials at the command center were able to immediately direct a merchant ship, which was about 60 miles away, to the sinking craft.

Meanwhile, as the rescue efforts were just beginning, Young was initially unaware that the boat was taking on water, his wife said.

"He was steering the boat and trying to get it back on course," Debra Young said. "It took him a while to realize he didn't have any steerage at all. It took him a bit longer to realize he was taking on water."

When the freighter arrived at around 4 a.m. Wednesday, Young scrambled off his boat by a rope ladder thrown by the ship's crew.

Young had been on the final leg of a trip from the East Coast to a marina in Emeryville, Calif., when the collision took place. The 67-year-old has been sailing for at least 30 years, but having worked on boats with his father, who was a commercial fisherman, he's been on the ocean most of his life, his wife said.

Debra Young said she has been able to talk to her husband while he's on board the merchant ship. He's not expected to make it back to Sacramento for another week or so.

Happy 70th birthday, Paul McCartney!

Kevin Winter / Kevin Winter / Getty Images

By Randee Dawn

Of course we still loved him when he was 64, and now that Paul McCartney has hit the milestone of turning 70, who says we can't love him even more?

McCartney rose to prominence as the "cute" Beatle in the 1960s, both as lead singer in the iconic band and also one of its principal songwriters; he and John Lennon wrote the bulk of the?Beatles' songs?and are considered one of rock-'n'-roll's preeminent teams. When the band split up in the 1970s, each of the four Beatles took their own solo recording paths, and McCartney was the only member to chart with regular success in the ensuing years.

Post-Beatles he released two solo albums, "McCartney" and "Ram," which featured vocal assistance from his wife Linda; eventually, he brought on more musicians to coalesce his solo career into new band Wings, and released seven albums with the outfit throughout the '70s, scoring hits with songs like "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "Band on the Run."

Since then, he's continued to release solo albums, his most recent being "Kisses on the Bottom," which came out early in 2012. But he's also got several classical albums under his belt and even has releases under multiple pseudonyms -- he was Percy "Thrills" Thrillington for the instrumental album version of "Ram" and he collaborated with electronica producer Youth as "The Fireman."

Over the years, McCartney has been married three times (most recently in 2011), had a minor planet named after him, a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth, an honorary doctorate in music from Yale and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He will close the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony on July 27.?

The Guinness Book of World Records calls him the "most successful composer and recording artist of all time," and he has sold over 100 million albums and singles.

Clearly, Paul McCartney has a lot to celebrate. Happy birthday, Sir Paul!

A gust of wind lifts the kilt-like uniform of a Greek presidential guard during the changing of the guard ceremony outside the Greek parliament, central Athens, Saturday, June 16, 2012. Greeks cast their ballots this Sunday for the second time in six weeks, after the May 6 elections left no party with enough seats in Parliament to form a government and coalition talks collapsed. (AP Photo/Petros Giannakouris)

(AP) ? The pro-bailout New Democracy party came in first Sunday in Greece's national election and could gather enough support to form a pro-bailout coalition to keep the country in the eurozone.

As central banks stood ready to intervene in case of financial turmoil, Greece held its second national election in just six weeks to try to select a new government after an inconclusive ballot on May 6.

Sunday's vote was seen as crucial for Europe and the world, since it could determine whether Greece is forced to leave the joint euro currency, a move that could have potentially catastrophic consequences for other ailing European nations and the global economy.

Although official projections late Sunday showed that no party will win enough seats in the 300-member parliament to form a government on its own, Greece's two traditional parties ? the conservative New Democracy and the socialist PASOK ? would have enough seats to form a coalition together.

They have both expressed a willingness to work with other European nations to stay in the 17-nation eurozone.

The projections showed New Democracy winning 29.5 percent and 128 seats. The radical left Syriza party, which has vowed to repeal Greece's international bailout deal, was expected to come in second with 27.1 percent and 72 seats. PASOK trails with 12.3 percent and 33 seats.

To form a majority government, a coalition would need at least 151 seats.

The parties vying to win have starkly different views about what to do about the ?240 billion ($300 billion) in bailout loans that Greece has been given by international lenders.

Greece has been dependent on rescue loans since May 2010, after sky-high borrowing rates left it locked out of the international markets following years of profligate spending and falsifying financial data. The spending cuts made in return have left the country mired in a fifth year of recession, with unemployment spiraling to above 22 percent and tens of thousands of businesses shutting down.

New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras says his top priority is to stay in the euro but has promised to renegotiate some terms of the bailout.

Syriza head Alexis Tsipras, a 37-year-old former student activist, has vowed to cancel the terms of Greece's international bailout deal and repeal its austerity measures.

"There are many power-sharing possibilities that include a vote of tolerance from parties," Syriza member Nikos Voutsis said on state television. "But we'll see.'"

The party that comes first in Sunday's vote gets a bonus of 50 seats in the 300-member Parliament and gets the first try at forming a new government with a majority in Parliament. If they fail, the next highest party gets to try.

Earlier, the exit polls projected seven parties in all beating the 3 percent threshold for seats in Parliament, including the extremist right-wing Golden Dawn party, which vehemently rejects the neo-Nazi label but has been blamed for numerous violent attacks against immigrants.

Golden Dawn was projected at winning between 6 and 7.5 percent, roughly maintaining the level of the nearly 7 percent it won in May ? a meteoric rise for a fringe party that had polled at just 0.3 percent.

The small Democratic Left party was projected at winning between 5.5 and 6.5 percent, with the right-wing Independent Greeks tied with Golden Dawn at 6-7.5 percent.

There are no rules governing a country's exit from the eurozone. A Greek exit could cause economic chaos in Europe, prompt investors to flee stocks in the U.S. , and spark a panic that other debt-strapped European nations ? Portugal, Ireland, Spain and Italy ? might also have to leave the eurozone.

That domino scenario ? known in economic terms as contagion ? could engulf the euro, causing a global financial panic not unlike the one that gripped the world in 2008 after the investment firm Lehman Brothers failed in the U.S.

Virtually unknown outside of Greece four months ago, Tsipras and his party shot to prominence in the May 6 vote, where he came a surprise second and quadrupled his support since the 2009 election.

Tsipras, has vowed to rip up Greece's bailout agreements and repeal the austerity measures, which have included deep spending cuts on everything from health care to education and infrastructure, as well as tax hikes and reductions of salaries and pensions.

But his pledges, which include canceling planned privatizations, nationalizing banks and rolling back cuts to minimum wages and pensions, have horrified European leaders, as well as many Greeks. Tsipras' opponents argue that the inexperienced young politician is out of touch with reality.

"We have beaten fear. Today we open a road to hope," Tspiras said, adding that he was confident of victory. "Today we open a road to a better tomorrow, with our people united, dignified and proud. In a Greece of social justice and prosperity, an equal member of a Europe that is changing."

Samaras, meanwhile, cast Sunday's choice as one between the euro and returning to the drachma. He has vowed to renegotiate some of the bailout's harsher terms but insists the top priority is for the country to remain in Europe's joint currency.

"Today the Greek people speak. Tomorrow a new era for Greece begins," Samaras said after voting in southern Greece.

Earlier Sunday, about 10 men armed with sledgehammers and wooden bats attacked a polling station in central Athens, wounding two policemen guarding it and setting fire to the ballot box shortly before polls closed. The attack ? the only one reported so far ? took place in the Athens neighborhood of Exarhia, a traditional haven for leftists and anarchists.

Greek police were also investigating the discovery Sunday of two unexploded hand grenades outside private Skai television station on the outskirts of Athens. Greek government spokesman Demetris Tsiodras denounced the devices as an attempt to spoil the smooth running of the election.

(AP) ? Mitt Romney is trying to steer his bus tour back to middle-class economic issues as he visits three communities in Pennsylvania following a detour caused by President Barack Obama's new policy on the deportation of young illegal immigrants.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee plans to keep up his focus on jobs and the economy, arguing that he's the candidate who will give average Americans a "fair shot" at prosperity.

Romney is targeting smaller cities and towns through the state's conservative midsection. He planned stops Saturday at a casting and machine company in Weatherly, a convenience store in Quakertown and an old iron furnace in Cornwall that's now a national historic landmark.

The tour is intended to challenge Obama in states where he's strong ? the president won Pennsylvania in 2008, and no Republican has won the state since 1988. In 2008, Republican nominee John McCain won two of the counties Romney plans to visit.

The last time Romney was in the Keystone State, he was campaigning with Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and saying he was "studying" the Cuban-American's ideas for legislation that would allow some illegal immigrants to stay in the country to work.

The opening of Romney's six-state, five-day tour was overshadowed by Obama's announcement Friday that the U.S. would no longer deport some young illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children. In response, Romney softened the harsh rhetoric he used in addressing illegal immigration during the contentious GOP primary campaign.

"It's an important matter to be considered and should be solved on a long-term basis so they know what their future would be in this country," Romney told reporters after stepping off his bus in New Hampshire. Obama's executive order was problematic, he said, because "an executive order, of course, is a short-term matter. It can be reversed by subsequent presidents."

That measured response echoed Rubio's own reaction to Obama's announcement. Although pressed by reporters, Romney refused to take a firm position or say whether he would, if elected president, reverse the executive order.

The focus on immigration also threatened to raise questions about whether Romney would shift his positions based on changing political circumstances.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, adopted a tough line on immigration during the primary, calling the so-called DREAM Act a "handout" and saying he would veto it as president. The legislation would provide a pathway to citizenship for young illegal immigrants who attended college or served in the military.

Romney faces pressure to appeal to the Hispanic voters who will be critical in battleground states like Nevada and Colorado, but he also risks alienating his conservative base if he abandons his previously tough stances.

The bus tour ? Romney plans to fly each night to the next state and ride from town to town during the day ? is his first traditional campaign swing and is aimed at undecided voters in six battleground states: New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa. Obama won them all in 2008.

"If there's ever been a president who has not given a fair shot to the middle-income Americans of this great nation, it is Barack Obama," Romney declared from a makeshift podium during an "ice cream social" in a New Hampshire town square on Friday. "I understand what it takes to get people to work again. I will do that to help the American people from the richest to the poorest and everybody in between."

The tour represents a new mode for Romney in the general election. During the primary, Romney sometimes ran into trouble in less-scripted environments and the bus tour is likely to test him again. He also has long faced questions about his ability to connect with average Americans.

Graduated driving laws reduce teen drunk driving

ScienceDaily (June 15, 2012) ? State laws that limit driving privileges for teens have reduced the incidence of drinking and driving among the nation's youngest licensees, according to a new study from researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

The vast majority of states now have laws that limit teen driving privileges and impose stiff penalties for driving under the influence. Graduated driving licensing laws limit the number of passengers young drivers may transport and how late at night they're allowed to drive, among other restrictions.

The researchers evaluated the effects of those laws on alcohol use and risky driving behaviors among teens in 45 states. The study is now available online and will be published September 2012 in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.

"Teens in states with the strongest laws were less likely to drive after drinking or to ride in a car with a driver who had been drinking," says first author Patricia A. Cavazos-Rehg, PhD, research assistant professor of psychiatry. "In states with the toughest laws, teens were half as likely to engage in those risky behaviors."

Teens comprise less than 5 percent of licensed drivers in the country, but they account for roughly 20 percent of motor vehicle crashes.

"In the last decade, most states have strengthened their graduated licensing laws," Cavazos-Rehg explains. "States are learning that a benefit of enacting more restrictive laws is a reduction in risky behavior by young drivers. That can lead to fewer accidents and save lives."

Earlier research has demonstrated that graduated driving laws reduce both fatal and non-fatal motor vehicle accidents among teens. Other studies have found that states with more restrictive licensing laws also had experienced 30 percent reductions in fatal crashes involving teen drivers.

"We were interested in determining whether these laws were making it less likely for teens to engage in drinking and driving behaviors," Cavazos-Rehg says.

The researchers gathered drinking and driving information from more than 220,000 16-17-year olds who were surveyed between 1999 and 2009, when state laws that restrict teen driving were strengthened.

They then compared the anonymous surveys with state laws and found that teens living in states with the strictest laws also were least likely to drink and drive or to ride in a car with a driver who had been drinking.

Cavazos-Rehg can't say precisely what is causing the decrease in risky drinking and driving behaviors, but she believes nighttime restrictions that limit how late a young driver can be behind the wheel may be key.

"That's getting teens to go home earlier, which means they may not have the opportunity to go to parties where there are opportunities to drink," she says. "We haven't looked at that closely yet, but that's the next step."

The other aspects that may influence teens' behavior include stiff penalties, like suspension of a driver's license, for violations, Cavazos-Rehg says. Many laws also require more experience and education behind the wheel before a license is granted than was required in past years. And in most states that have enacted these laws, teens don't receive full driving privileges until they are 18 or even older.

Should Jerry Sandusky Still Be Called 'Coach'?

During serial child molester Jerry Sandusky's trial, former Penn St. quarterback and current asst. coach Mike McQueary was called to testify on what he saw the day he witnessed Sandusky molesting a boy in the Penn State locker room showers.?

In referencing Sandusky, McQueary used the direct term 'Coach Sandusky.'

"I see in the mirror Coach Sandusky standing behind boy propped up against the shower, with the showers running, right up against his back with his front, the boy's hands up against the wall," he said. "When I saw them with my own eyes, there was not hard or fast movement. There was subtle movement on defendant's part (in his) mid section."

The quote is here in this article-eight paragraphs down.

He didn't have to use the word 'coach', but chose to do so. ?In the rest of his testimony, he referenced Sandusky as 'Jerry' and the 'defendant.'

Unfortunately, because he did call him 'coach' the one time, McQueary defiled coaches everywhere in the country.

Jerry Sandusky lost the privilege of being called 'coach' a long time ago.

It is common knowledge that people while in coaching positions have done horrible things to children throughout all the states of the U.S. ?There are dozens of cases that have been documented over the years.

The media has done a very good job of reporting the crimes and bringing the sensitive relationship of coaches to the forefront.

Once it has been shown that a person used their position as 'coach' to harm others, they must not be referred to as 'coach' any time thereafter.

Those coaches around the country who have earned and kept their reputation in their communities deserve better. ?Coaches don't have to be revered, but?they shouldn't have to be classified in a similar manner with child molesters.

The search is on for America's ugliest car - Bottom Line

The Detroit Bureau

Is this America's "Sweetest Lemon"?

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

We?ve all seen the rusted out, dinged up lemons, paint peeling, bumpers missing and bumpers hanging on with a bungee cord.? But which of these is really America?s ugliest automobile?? That?s what the folks from Hagerty Insurance want to find out ? and the winner among those losers could be in for a sweet surprise as part of the second annual ?Search for America?s Sweetest Lemons.?

The grand prize is an all-expenses-paid trip to the year?s most exclusive automotive event, the Monterey Classic Car Week in California?s tony Pebble Beach.

The winning car will come along for the ride, there to be celebrated alongside rarities like a Bugatti Royale and some equally rare gems.? Appropriately, the winner of the Sweetest Lemons contest will serve as Grand Marshal of the Concours d?LeMons, now being renamed Hagerty?s Tour of Lemons.

?The event is a mock race that requires entrants to come up with the cheapest, rudest and crudest junkers they can find.? Simply having the car survive the race is generally considered a certain degree of victory.

?We believe all cars are beautiful and deserve to be celebrated,? said McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty. ?This is an opportunity to showcase these eccentric, quirky and weird vehicles. Many cars that were once viewed as hopeless now enjoy an enthusiastic, cult-like following.?

Whether the winners of the contest will develop their own cult ? complete with car groupies or not ? remains to be seen, but there?s a growing counter-culture following for truly awful automobiles, as demonstrated by the growing success of what is now the Tour of Lemons.

GM?s German Union May Accept Plant Closing

The big race will take place only a few miles away from the Lodge at Pebble Beach where the 2012 Concours d?Elegance is scheduled.? It is generally considered the most exclusive classic car event in the world and routinely draws some of the rarest vehicles in the world to compete ? some only after restoration efforts that can top $10 million, significantly more than the entire field at the Tour of Lemons.

Anyone who wants to risk going up against America?s other great lemons can submit a photo of their car and a brief description of why it deserves to be christened ?America?s Sweetest Lemon.?? Submissions can be sent to SweetestLemon@Hagerty.com by Sunday, July 8. The top ten candidates will be posted for public voting from July 11 ? 20 at the Hagerty website.
