The Los Angeles Kings are in the Stanley Cup finals for the first time since 1993. Is this a big deal in the city boasting 16 NBA Championships? Yes, even if it pales by the comparison to the elation caused by the Lakers.

When Laker excitement is high ? during big games, big championship series ? cars speed down the boulevards to make their purple-and-gold car flags snap in the wind. They honk to make their point. The Kings? You have to go to a game to witness the real mania ? which is deep but not as widespread. But give it some time, sports fans here say.

?There?s a lot of anger right now about the Lakers losing ? maybe even more than the happiness that the Kings are in the finals,? says Vincent Bonsignore, sports columnist for the L.A. Daily News. ?You turn on the radio, and they?re still talking about how to fix the Lakers and what trades to make.?

The NBA?s L.A. Clippers also became contenders after adding Chris Paul this year, and so add that barometer reading to the L.A. sports landscape ? ?steady drizzle? after they fizzled to a four-game sweep at the hands of the San Antonio Spurs.

?This will hit a crescendo, give it some time,? says Bonsignore. ?We?re starting to see some Kings hats and jerseys coming out of the woodworks, it?s not like the Lakers, but these fans are extremely passionate. They had an incredible run.?

It was made even more incredible because no one saw it coming.

The Kings replaced their coach midseason after lots of struggling ? primarily, figuring out how to score. Still tinkering as the end of the 82-game season approached, a trade for forward Jeff Carter seemed to make something click. Carter has been far from a savior, but with him the team has become more balanced and more difficult to defend ? and goals have come, at last.

Even so, their postseason run has been nothing short of astounding. They entered the Stanley Cup playoffs seeded No. 8 of the eight playoff teams in the Western Conference. Since that point, they have won 12 games and lost two against the Nos. 1, 2, and 3 seeds in the West.

?Everything lined up, the stars lined, and it came together at the right point of the season,? Dustin Penner, who scored the series-winning goal against the Phoenix Coyotes Tuesday, told the L.A. Daily News. ?We knew once we were in [the playoffs] that it was anybody?s game.?

Sometimes independent retailing involves far more than just retailing. Sometimes it can get pretty complicated. And with revenues off, sometimes those complications, and the decisions they now require, can become pretty daunting.

An independent garden center that grows rather than buys most of its annuals.
An antique furniture retailer that resizes all of its antique beds, while doing some of the refinishing themselves, and subbing out the rest.
An independent footwear retailer that operates lease departments along with its own retail stores.
Another independent footwear retailer which also sells industrial footwear directly through institutional accounts.
A ceramic tile retailer that?s also an importer and a distributor.

What pieces of the business are profitable?
Which are not? Where exactly am I bleeding cash?
Where can I cut?
Where can?t I?
What segments should I drop?
Expand?
Consolidate?
Outsource?
Which road should I take?
There are many independent retailers who are involved in far more than just retail. Over the years, their businesses have grown and evolved as opportunity called or necessity dictated. They had to develop new skills and learn new markets. In some cases the evolution was deliberately planned out, in others decisions had to be made in a flash. These are all businesses I?ve worked with at one time or another.

One other thing that they had in common was that while they were always able to measure the overall profitability of the business, they struggled to break out the profitability of each segment separately, if they felt the need to really try at all. This is not at all unusual among independents. And so, in this downturn, one of the challenges for hybrid independent retailers is understanding exactly what segments of their business are contributing and what segments are draining cash.

They can clearly quantify the changes in revenue by segment, but breaking down costs, and appropriately allocating costs is often something they?ve not previously spent a lot of time on. (Something their larger corporate counterparts have had the resources to break down and study in the minutest of detail.) One reason is that their retail business has dictated that their operating system be a point-of-sale system. For these independent retailers, a POS system is usually inadequate for capturing the full range of costs, and allocating them properly to different operations and cost centers.

Further, in a smaller business, the lines between different functions frequently blur, both on the ground and in the way data is captured and processed. Thus, even the general ledgers can get pretty muddy. For many independent retailers, this has become a problem as they struggle with cash flow, decisions about how to reduce costs, and whether to discontinue certain business segments or outsource certain processes. And yet, in this new environment, when spending patterns have changed and real retail prices are dropping, everything has to be reviewed and reconsidered. Every segment must be understood completely. Some functions, like growing part of your live stock yourself or finishing restored and resized antique beds, may need to be discontinued if it?s more economically to outsource instead.

Or, perhaps it all needs to be done in-house. Some of the lease departments may need to be terminated, or perhaps the business needs to be fully converted to a leased department model. Or converted strictly to an industrial accounts business model. Perhaps the business that?s both a retailer and a wholesaler should focus solely on one or the other. This is one of those times when circumstances require that every independent retailer be prepared to once again adapt and change in order to once again move forward.

Greece bridles at Merkel referendum suggestion

Greek political leaders reacted angrily on Saturday to a suggestion, attributed to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, that the country hold a referendum on euro membership alongside an election next month.

The chancellor's move -- despite a denial by Berlin -- went down badly with leaders sensitive to any comments from Germany, which has insisted that Athens stick to tough austerity measures agreed in return for a massive EU-IMF bailout.

"The Greek people have no need for a referendum to demonstrate their choice for the euro, they have already made enough costly sacrifices to show that," said Antonis Samaras, leader of the conservative New Democracy party which won inconclusive May 6 polls.

Merkel's suggestion, "above all coming in the run-up to the election, is regrettable and unacceptable," Samaras said in a statement. "The Greek people has the right to respect from its (European) partners."

The office of the caretaker prime minister said on Friday that Merkel "conveyed thoughts (to the president) on holding a referendum alongside the election, on the question of whether Greek citizens wish to remain in the eurozone."

The suggestion was turned down, a statement said, because the caretaker government only has the authority to organise the new polls, expected June 17.

Berlin bluntly denied any such move.

"The information reported that the chancellor had suggested a referendum to the Greek President Carolos Papoulias is wrong," a Merkel spokeswoman said.

Alexis Tsipras, leader of the radical left Syriza party which came second in the May 6 vote on a campaign against the austerity policies, alluded to Germany's wartime record in Greece, a hugely sensitive and controversial period.

"Madame Merkel is used to talking to Greek political leaders as if she was addressing a protectorate," Tsipras said.

"Greeks are going to give a definitive answer (in the upcoming polls) and are going to put an end to the policies of austerity and submission, they will open the way for progressive forces across Europe," he added.

The leader of the socialist Pasok party, which along with New Democracy backed the EU-IMF accord and suffered accordingly on May 6, said only the Greek parliament and government had the authority to call a referendum.

"The question for Greece is not whether it stays in the euro or not, but whether it can get out of the crisis," Evangelos Venizelos said.

Greek newspapers were even more critical -- "Merkel Ultimatum," was the pro-Socialist Ta Nea front page headline.

"It's a Merkel Bomb for a euro referendum, an unprecedented political intervention which makes things worse," wrote Eleftheros Typos on the right, while financial daily Naftemporiki also spoke of a "political bomb."

The Merkel imbroglio comes at a bad time, with the chancellor in Washington for G8 talks hosted by US President Barack Obama who has shown himself more sympathetic to the need for growth than austerity as Greece tops the agenda.

Obama said Friday he supported Greece staying in the eurozone, a region of "extraordinary importance" not only for Europe but also for the global economy.

Up to now, Merkel has insisted that Greece must stick to the austerity terms in the bailout deal or risk losing access to debt funding -- effectively forcing it out of the eurozone.

But in recent months, calls for the focus to be rebalanced towards growth have increased, with new French President Francois Hollande winning office earlier this month on a pledge for change.

Despite the brickbats, it is also clear that in effect the June 17 polls are fast becoming a straight vote on Greek acceptance of the bailout deal and its continued place in the eurozone.

After recent polls put Syriza in the lead, a survey Friday showed the race narrowing, giving New Democracy 23.1 percent of the vote, up from the 18.85 percent it won on May 6, with Syriza on 21 percent, up from 16.8 percent.

Fears that the new poll might not be able to produce a viable government committed to the bailout have roiled global markets and snared Spain where the government is struggling to stabilise its stricken banking system.

"Time is clearly running out," London-based analysts Capital Economics warned in a note over Greece's continued political paralysis.

"If the government does not meet the conditions required to receive the next tranche of the bailout, it could run out of money before the end of the summer."

Facebook IPO: Stock Falters, Still Raises $16 Billion

Call it the most disappointing $16 billion raised in investment history.

Facebook stock is off to a rocky start after its highly anticipated initial public offering (IPO), jumping more than 10 percent in the first few minutes of trading before sellers swept into the market and that gain evaporated.

“The stock is trading right at the IPO price,” one expert told the L.A. Times. “They didn’t want that in a million years. A traditional IPO is up 10% or 15%.”

The stock most recently hovered at about $40, only $2 above what shares were priced at late Thursday. Shares touched $38 multiple times during trading.

Investors also had to deal with a nearly three-hour delay for the stock to open. The Nasdaq kept the stock halted as it processed a crush of buy and sell orders.

The inauspicious opening after the Facebook IPO suggests that retail investors paid close attention to reports of soft financials and big selling by insiders.

Still, Facebook raised $16 billion in what will go down as the third-largest public offering in U.S. history and the biggest ever for a technology company.

Could be worse, right? Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg rang the Nasdaq opening bell from company headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif.

Eduardo Saverin, one of the company's co-founders, made news this week by giving up U.S. citizenship as a means of limiting his tax liability.

Touch and the Computer Interface ? Academic Technology at W&M

The computer world is becoming progressively ?touchy.? If you don?t believe me just ask anyone that has recently bought a Mac, upgraded to Apple?s new operating system, Lion (Mac OS X 10.7), or has played with the pre-release version of Windows 8 (due out later this year). Both of these operating systems, to different degrees, have made significant moves towards making your desktop computers behave more like an iPhone/iPad or Android device. Among many other changes this means that: their user interfaces rely heavily on a simulated touch interface analogy that uses your mouse and keyboard instead of your fingers (for now); applications that are more likely take over your entire computer screen; seemingly infinite virtual desktops that ?shift? the displayed content as needed; and generally simplified interfaces that hide or in some cases even remove some of the controls resulting in a much more ?appliance? feel to the whole environment.

None of this is new to the vast majority of us that by now are comfortable with smart phones and tablets, but Apple and Microsoft are now in the process of bringing this type of interface to your good-old desktop and laptop. ?All signs are that both companies are fully committed to this change and in many cases you will not have an option to go back and do things the ?old? way. For many users it has been, or will be, a jarring experience. I would argue that for most Windows users, the move from Windows 7 to Windows 8 will be the most dramatic in the almost 20 years since the introduction of Windows 95. While the introduction of Mac OS X 10.7 was less revolutionary, it imposed more changes on users than any since the move from Mac OS 9 in 2001.

Along with these changes both companies have and will continue to push a significantly different software development and deployment model than we?ve used for main-stream computer software in the past. Expect to see more and more ?apps? on your computer which are in many cases much less expensive and ?simpler,? are downloaded directly through a cloud-based ?store,? and are developed by companies that you may never have heard of, or may never hear from again after buying their application. Don?t expect MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and other software behemoths to become extinct anytime soon, but I?m sure most of these will have to evolve to compete against, or within, the ?stores.? As a matter a fact, just this month Adobe announced that many of their products would be available though a monthly/annual subscription model, and is already (timidly) testing the waters of using Apple?s App Store by selling it?s Adobe Photoshop Lightroom application there. As someone who has spent a significant amount of time dealing with academic software contracts, I cannot say I look forward to the amount of work that many of these changes will bring in the near future.

The short answer is the iPhone and iPad. The amazingly rapid adoption of these radically different devices has not been lost on the industry. For better or worse, everyone is looking to translate this success to their (your) computer products. Try and find a netbook or ?traditional? Tablet PC in a local store, they are still out there but in greatly diminished numbers, and I suspect they are the last of a dying breed.

The changes that we already know are coming, as currently implemented, seem to make little or no sense with the current hardware that most of us usually use to interface with our computers ? the mouse and keyboard. The changes in the operating systems, especially in the more radical Microsoft approach (for a change), seem to require some significant changes in how we?ll begin to interact with our computers in the future. The obvious changes include a real, rather than emulated, touch screen interface ? just bigger than the ones we?ve become used to on our phones and tablets. But I would not discount the mention of voice and/or gesture control ? think iPhone?s Siri meets Tom Cruise?s computer in Minority Report. Microsoft and Apple have to choose where to begin to make changes to how we interact with our computers, either in the operating system and graphical interface, or the hardware that we use to interface with the computers ? it?s a classic chicken-and-egg problem. Both companies have chosen to start by changing the operating system and graphical interface, even if the new devices that we?ll use to interact with them are not yet apparent.

Most of us currently use our computers through a combination of metaphors to emulate the real world we are familiar with (desktops, windows, tabs, icons, etc.) and devices to control these metaphors. Without a mouse, Windows and Mac OS X would make no sense, and without a graphic oriented operating system, mice would be of little use. In the next couple of years we will see radical changes to what these metaphors are and how we control them. In general I think this will lead to a richer and more intuitive experience. I just hope Apple and Microsoft don?t take the ?Appliance Model? too far, and give us an environment that is easier and ?prettier? to use, but at the cost of removing much of our control.

In the short term what remains to be seen is what the new ?mouse? will be, and how hard it will be for us set-in-our-ways folk to feel like this is more intuitive and richer.

When it comes to leatherback turtles, the world's largest species of sea turtle, there's a conundrum: The species itself is critically endangered, but at least one leatherback population is stable ? on the rise, even ? while others plummet.

Now, researchers may have discovered why some of these turtles are doing better than others. Studying two leatherback turtle populations, one that is declining and one that seems to be increasing, the researchers say the answer might be simple: food.

"We saw very big differences in their traveling speeds from their nesting beaches to their foraging grounds," said Helen Bailey, an ecologist at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science who led the study. "We take that to mean one population is stopping to forage on a nice dense patch of prey, while the other group keeps moving because it's constantly in search of food."

These differences in swimming and eating habits may hold important clues for helping leatherback turtles around the world recover and thrive, Bailey told OurAmazingPlanet.

Atlantic leatherback turtles seem to be doing OK, but the Pacific population could be extinct in the near future, Bailey said.

Leatherback turtles everywhere are often victims of bycatch, the unintentional netting and killing of turtles while fishing for other animals, but leatherbacks in the Pacific Ocean face another problem. Climate patterns like the El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation cause huge variations in temperature and productivity in the Pacific Ocean, making it hard for some animals to find reliable food supplies. These challenges, combined with leatherbacks' advanced breeding age (around 15 years for females), mean that the Pacific leatherback turtle population has taken a serious hit over the last two decades.

To figure out the difference between these two groups, Bailey looked at how the turtles swim. Using data from leatherbacks that had been tagged and tracked by satellite, she found that Atlantic leatherbacks have two modes of travel: fast (12-28 miles per day, or 20-45 kilometers per day) and slow (less than 9 miles per day, or 15 km per day). Pacific leatherbacks, on the other hand, have only one: a cruising speed of about 13 miles per day (21 km per day). [ In Images: Tagging & Tracking Sea Turtles ]

Atlantic leatherbacks seem to run from one smorgasbord to another, stopping at a dense patch of jellyfish (their main food source) to eat until it's gone. Pacific leatherbacks never find dense patches of jellyfish, so they swim at the same rather fast speed the whole time, Bailey said.

"They're constantly searching for food," Bailey said. "If you have to keep moving, you're not gaining quite as much energy because even if you manage to eat along the way, you're still expending some energy by traveling."

In other words, the main difference between the two populations is that Atlantic turtles can dine in and chow down, while Pacific leatherbacks have to settle for the drive-through window and eating on the run.

Bailey's findings, detailed in the May issue of the journal PLoS ONE, point to new leatherback turtle conservation strategies.

"It's really highlighted very strongly the importance of protecting adult leatherbacks," Bailey said in an interview.

Facebook raises IPO price as offering nears

NEW YORK (AP) ? Already expected to be the largest-ever initial public offering for an Internet company, Facebook is making its IPO even bigger.

The world's largest online social network on Tuesday increased the planned price range for its stock to $34 to $38 per share in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. That's up from its previous range of $28 to $35. At the upper limit of $38, the sale would raise about $12.8 billion.

The move, which values Facebook as high as $104 billion, comes amid growing investor excitement about the offering. Analysts are comparing the frenzy surrounding Facebook's IPO to Google Inc.'s in 2004, though in sheer size the latter pales in comparison.

At the same time, half of Americans think the expected value for Facebook Inc. is too high, according to a new Associated Press-CNBC poll conducted before the company raised its expected stock price on Tuesday. Only a third of those surveyed said they think Facebook's expected value is appropriate.

Wall Street doesn't share that sentiment.

"Demand is obscenely high," said Scott Sweet the owner of advisory firm IPOBoutique about the offering. That said, he notes Facebook still has to be careful not to increase the price too much, so the stock still does well when it begins trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market, as expected, on Friday.

"This is a deal that literally must work, in that it is so high-profile," he said. "It would really level the IPO market if Facebook flopped."

As it stands, Facebook would be the fourth-largest U.S. IPO in history, edging out AT&T Wireless, whose 2000 IPO raised $10.6 billion according to Renaissance Capital, an IPO investment advisory firm.

The AP-CNBC survey, meanwhile, found that of average Americans who invest in the stock market, 58 percent think Facebook's valuation is too high at around $100 billion. That's larger than well-known companies such as Ford and Kraft but smaller than Google or Microsoft. About 3 in 10 investors called the expected value fair.

Price worries won't necessarily stop would-be investors. Facebook raised the price range in response strong demand for its stock, and it's possible that the stock could price even higher on Thursday.

The Menlo Park, Calif.-based company is offering 337 million shares in its IPO. Of those, 157 million shares aren't coming from the company, but from existing stockholders, including the company's earliest investors and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Even after the offering, Zuckerberg will remain Facebook's single largest shareholder. And he will control the company through 57 percent of its voting stock. Based on the high end of the price range, he'll get about $1.15 billion from the stock he is selling.

The IPO is is expected to raise more than 10 times as much as the $1.67 billion raised in Google eight years ago. At a value of $38 per share, the high end of Facebook's expected range, Facebook would generate $6.84 billion on its shares. Existing stockholders would collectively make $5.98 billion.

Even at the higher price range, it's going to be tough for the company's fans and everyday investors to get in on the IPO. Most of the shares are expected to go to people with connections to the company or those who have large, active accounts with the big banks or brokerage firms directly involved in the stock sale.

Morgan Stanley leads the team of 33 underwriters selected for the Facebook offering, followed by JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs. The company will trade under the ticker symbol "FB."

Analysts say there's so much interest in Facebook's stock that some underwriters are closing their books as early as Tuesday. This means they won't be taking any more orders from potential buyers.

In its Tuesday filing, Facebook also adjusted the timetable for finishing its $1 billion acquisition of Instagram, saying it expects the deal to close sometime in 2012. Previously, it had said it expected to complete the deal in the second quarter.

Some analysts have speculated that the acquisition of the photo-sharing network would come under regulatory scrutiny. If the deal doesn't close by Dec. 10, Facebook could have to pay Instagram a breakup fee of $200 million.
